Rule 5 first baseman Ji-Man Choi went 1-for-18 (.056), albeit with six walks, in sporadic play this season before the Angels designated him for assignment when they needed 40-man roster space. No other team claimed Choi on waivers, and when Los Angeles offered him back to the Orioles, Baltimore apparently declined to buy Choi back for $25,000. Thus the Angels retained his rights for no compensation and can now work free of the Rule 5 restrictions. As a previously outrighted player, however, Choi could have elected free agency rather than accept the Angels’ outright assignment.

Double-A Binghamton righthander Robert Gsellman suffered a mild groin strain, forcing him to the disabled list. The 22-year-old is quietly enjoying a fine season in the Eastern League, after making 16 starts there last season. Through seven starts this year, Gsellman has gone 1-2, 2.21 with 7.3 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine innings, while allowing 30 hits in 41 innings. The Padres prepared to return Rule 5 pick Jabari Blash to the Mariners when they designated him for assignment on May 13, but after the 26-year-old cleared waivers, the two teams worked out a trade. San Diego sent an undisclosed sum of money to Seattle so that they could retain the rights to Blash, a corner outfielder who started just three games for the Padres this season and hit .120 with a double in 25 at-bats while striking out 45 percent of the time.
Blash hit 32 home runs in the high minors last season, piquing the interest of the Padres, who now can assign him to Triple-A El Paso for more seasoning.
