2024 Top MLB Draft Prospects

By Carlos Collazo

Baseball America’s draft rankings are an attempt to capture the industry’s consensus on the talent of the 2024 draft class. The list is compiled in consultation with MLB scouts, front office executives, scouting directors, college coaches and other professional evaluators.

We’re more than halfway through the college season and just under three months away from the 2024 draft. With that we’re making our second in-season update to our draft rankings and expanding the board to the top 400 players in the class.

That means at this stage we’re getting into the pool of talent that teams will be picking over on the third day of the draft, plus a number of senior signs who fit there on talent but could go sooner because of signability.

A top group of eight players has solidified at the top of the draft with most scouts viewing the group as the top tier of players. That group is as follows:

  1. Charlie Condon, OF, Georgia
  2. Travis Bazzana, 2B, Oregon State
  3. Jac Caglianone, 1B/LHP, Florida
  4. Chase Burns, RHP, Wake Forest
  5. Braden Montgomery, OF, Texas A&M
  6. Hagen Smith, LHP, Arkansas
  7. Nick Kurtz, 1B, Wake Forest
  8. JJ Wetherholt, 2B, West Virginia

Mock Draft Version 2.0

Carlos Collazo’s second in-season mock maps out projections for every team in the first round.

The top of the class looks strong at this point, though still not quite to the level of 2023’s elite top five. The tier of players after this group is seen almost universally as a below-average group. The high school hitters are down and the high school pitching at the top end is also down, though there have been a few up-arrow northern arms you’ll see below tracking in the right direction.

The college pitching overall has been a disappointment outside of the top three arms in the class. Many top talents have struggled with performance, control or both. The strength of the class lies solely with college hitters. The industry at this stage expects the first round to be extremely heavy on that demographic. Even then, there are more corner profiles than a year ago.

Twenty four of the players ranked inside the top 30 come from the four-year demographic. Eighteen of those players are hitters.

Teams picking in the middle and back end of the first round will need to cast a wide net down the stretch as they bear down on their first pick targets with how wide open the class is beyond the top tier of players. That might not be fun for scouting directors, but it’ll certainly be fun for fans of the draft and could make for a chaotic day one draft night in July.

Below BA subscribers can see the full top 400 with scouting reports for each player. Please note, players previously ranked will have preseason or early season reports. Those will be updated in the coming months on our final draft board, which will also include BA Grades and tools grades for the top players in the class.
