Background: The Reds acquired Minaya from the Marlins this offseason in exchange for outfielder Pat Watkins. Minaya fell three innings short of qualifying for the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League ERA title in 1998, his fourth pro season. Strengths: Minaya has a pure power arm. He throws his fastball in the 94-95 mph range and can reach 97. He adds a hard slider and a changeup, and can throw all his pitches for strikes. Weaknesses: Teams don't trade young pitchers who throw 97 without a reason. Minaya has a cocky, arrogant attitude on and off the mound and was suspended and sent home to the Dominican Republic at least once by the Marlins. He has yet to prove he can pitch in a full-season league despite having signed in 1994. The Future: The Reds have open eyes about Minaya's past. They hope the opportunities Minaya will get to advance quickly through their system will help his maturity. Scouting director DeJon Watson, a former Marlins employee, brokered the trade.
