Top 100 Signing Bonuses Of The 2023 MLB Draft

With the draft signing deadline behind us, below are the players who signed for the top 100 bonuses in the 2023 draft. 

MLB’s bonus pool draft system means that some of the top-ranked players will be selected with later picks, but still sign for bonuses well above slot value which are more in line with players picked sooner. The most obvious example of that this year was lefthander Thomas White, who wasn’t selected until the 35th pick, but signed for a $4.1 million bonus that was good for the 15th-highest bonus in the class.

The D-backs, Braves, Tigers, Brewers, A’s and Rays each signed five players for top-100 bonuses this year, tied for the most of any club. The Rangers, Cardinals, Padres, Phillies and Yankees each had just one player signed to a top-100 bonus, tied for the fewest of any club. Notably, those were the four teams with the lowest overall bonus pools, plus the Rangers, who picked at No. 4 overall and then not again until No. 108 in the fourth round.

Among top 100 bonuses (technically 101 players, with a three-way tie for No. 99 at the bottom), most went to college (55) and the rest came from the high school ranks (45), with no junior college players represented.

College players on this list totaled $134.2 million in total signing bonuses, compared to high school players who totaled $114.5 million. On average, however, the high school players slightly edged out their college counterparts with a $2.489 million average bonus for high school players and a $2.441 million average bonus for college players.

Among states, Florida had the most top-100 bonus players with 15. North Carolina and California tied for second, with nine apiece, followed by Virginia, Texas and Louisiana with six players and Mississippi, Illinois and Georgia with four players.
