Opening Day Injury Report 2016

This Opening Day Injury Report contains all players who began the 2016 season on the minor league disabled list.

The Rockies and Brewers are missing from this installment, so they will have to be added later.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP J.R. Bradley, RHP Matt Capps, RHP Brent Jones, RHP Jose Martinez, RHP Paul Smyth, C Matt Jones

Atlanta Braves
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Tyler Brosius, RHP Josh Graham, RHP Victor Mateo, RHP Britt Robertshaw, RHP Kanekoa Texeira, RHP Bryton Trepagnier, RHP Rob Wooten, LHP Chris Diaz, LHP Brady Feigl, LHP Steve Kent, LHP A.J. Minter, C Sal Giardina, C Matt Kennelly, C Braeden Schlehuber, SS Kurt Hoekstra, SS Luis Valenzuela, OF Leudys Baez, OF Dian Toscano

Former Texas A&M lefthander A.J. Minter, a supplemental second-round pick last June, probably will make his pro debut later in 2016 after having Tommy John surgery a year ago. Southpaw Chris Diaz, a fifth-rounder from Miami in 2014, missed the 2015 season after having surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder.

Baltimore Orioles
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Nate Adcock, RHP Sam Deduno, RHP Hunter Harvey, RHP Branden Kline, RHP Zeke McGranahan, RHP Janser Severino, LHP Jeff Beliveau, LHP Matt Taylor, 1B Derek Peterson, 1B Logan Uxa, 3B Austin Anderson, SS Guillermo Salas, OF Conor Bierfeldt, OF Jamill Moquete

Righthander Hunter Harvey made 17 starts at low Class A Delmarva in 2014, striking out 10.9 and allowing 6.8 hits per nine innings, but he hasn’t pitched since then after enduring shin and elbow injuries in 2015. He made three relief appearances in big league camp this spring but begins in extended spring training. The Orioles plan for Harvey to join high Class A Frederick in mid-April.

Boston Red Sox
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Jacob Dahlstrand, RHP Michael Kopech, LHP Trey Ball, C Danny Bethea, C J.T. Watkins, 2B Reed Gragnani, OF Brennan Boesch, OF Bryce Brentz, OF Carlos Mesa, OF Derek Miller

A pair of Red Sox high school first-rounders—lefty Trey Ball (2013) and righty Michael Kopech (2014)—open the season on the disabled list. The good news: neither has an arm injury. Ball is dealing with a knee injury, while Kopech is recovering from a fractured pitching hand, which he injured in an altercation with an unnamed teammate this spring.

Chicago Cubs
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Aaron Crow, RHP Steve Perakslis, RHP Jonathan Pettibone, LHP Tyler Ihrig, LHP Jack Leathersich, LHP John Williamson, C Ben Carhart, C Erick Castillo, 2B Stephen Bruno, 3B Adonis Paula, OF Trey Martin, OF Matt Murton
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Frank Batista, RHP Jose Zapata, C Will Remillard

The Cubs will attempt to rehab a couple relievers with big league experience—righty Aaron Crow and lefty Jack Leathersich—who both were non-tendered last December.

Chicago White Sox
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP James Dykstra, RHP Matt Heidenreich, RHP Charlie Shirek, RHP Cody Winiarski, LHP Jace Fry, 1B Keon Barnum, 3B Nick Delmonico, OF Vinny Rottino
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Miguel Chalas

Lefthander Jace Fry had Tommy John surgery while at Oregon State, and the 2014 third-rounder had the procedure a second time last season after 10 starts at high Class A Winston-Salem.

Cincinnati Reds
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Mark Armstrong, RHP Nick Christiani, RHP Jonathon Crawford, RHP Brian Hunter, RHP Dan Langfield, RHP Matt Magill, RHP Kevin Shackelford, RHP Zack Weiss, LHP Nolan Becker, 2B Ronald Bueno, 3B Gavin LaValley, SS Alex Blandino, SS Luis Gonzalez
Placed on 60-day DL: LHP Joel Bender

Righthander Jonathon Crawford, a 2013 first-round pick out Florida by the Tigers, made just five starts in 2015 before succumbing to August surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The Reds acquired him and Eugenio Suarez from Detroit in December 2014 for Alfredo Simon.

Shortstop Alex Bladino went 5-for-20 (.250) in big league camp, but he opens the season on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. The 2014 first-rounder from Stanford spent the final month of 2015 at Double-A Pensacola after a big year in the high Class A Florida State League.

Cleveland Indians
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Dylan Baker, RHP Jacob Lee, RHP Craig Stammen, RHP Enosil Tejeda, RHP Casey Weathers, C Eric Haase, 3B Justin Toole, OF Anthony Gallas, OF LeVon Washington

A fifth-round pick in 2012 from Western Nevada JC, righthander Dylan Baker joined the 40-man roster last November despite throwing just 58 innings in 2014 and 2015. That’s how well his stuff plays. Baker had Tommy John surgery in 2015 and then had a cleanup procedure to remove scar tissue in January that will delay his start to 2016.

Detroit Tigers
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Dominic Moreno, RHP Zac Reininger, RHP Montreal Robertson, RHP Drew Smith, RHP Slade Smith, RHP Trey Teakell, RHP Spencer Turnbull, LHP Anthony Fernandez, LHP Tyler Ford, LHP Kevin Ziomek, OF Ismael Salgado

A trio of college pitchers from the past three drafts open the season on the disabled list: lefty Kevin Ziomek (second round, 2013, Vanderbilt), righty Spencer Turnbull (second round, 2014, Alabama) and righty Drew Smith (third round, 2015, Dallas Baptist).

Houston Astros
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Agapito Barrios, RHP Christian Powell, RHP Gonzalo Sanudo, LHP Chris Cotton, LHP Kent Emanuel, LHP Albert Minnis, LHP Bryan Radziewski, OF James Ramsay
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Tyson Perez

Kansas City Royals
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Kyle Zimmer

The fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft, Kyle Zimmer is working through a dead arm period in extended spring training, and the Royals don’t have a timetable for his return. The righthander hasn’t cracked an Opening Day roster since 2013 at high Class A Wilmington, the result of being waylaid by various shoulder ailments and workload restrictions imposed by the organization.

Los Angeles Angels
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Ryan Etsell, RHP Deolis Guerra, RHP Nate Hyatt, RHP Michael Smith, LHP Jonah Wesely, SS Jake Yacinich

Los Angeles Dodgers
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Brandon Beachy, RHP Daniel Corcino, RHP Jose De Leon, RHP Pablo Fernandez, RHP Dillon Moyer, RHP Red Patterson, RHP David Reid-Foley, RHP Bernardo Reyes, RHP Yaisel Sierra, RHP Derrick Sylvester, LHP Alex Burgos, LHP Jeff Malm, C Vin DiFazio, C Spencer Navin, 1B Josmar Cordero, OF Rico Noel, OF Donavan Tate

Righthander Jose De Leon should join wunderkind Julio Urias at Triple-A Oklahoma City in short order. He is dealing with a “minor” ankle injury.

Cuban righthander Yaisel Sierra, who signed for six years and $24 million (plus a $6 million bonus) in February, is working in extended spring training as he prepares for his first U.S. season.

Miami Marlins
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Joel Effertz, RHP Breck Kline, RHP Tyler Kolek, RHP Matt Ramsey, RHP Kelvin Rivas, RHP Colby Suggs, RHP Nick Williams, LHP Miguel Del Pozo, LHP Chris Sadberry, LHP Sean Townsley, C Maxx Tissenbaum, 2B Danny Black, 2B Mason Davis, SS Justin Twine, OF Junior Sosa

Righthander Tyler Kolek had Tommy John surgery on April 6, and now the No. 2 overall pick from the 2014 draft won’t take the mound again until 2017.

Minnesota Twins
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Jason Adam, RHP Nick Burdi, RHP Michael Cederoth, RHP Alex Muren, RHP Fernando Romero, LHP Cameron Booser, LHP Lewis Thorpe, C Jairo Rodriguez, 2B Aderlin Mejia, 3B Niko Goodrum, 3B Stephen Wickens, OF Shannon Wilkerson

Righthander Nick Burdi must contend with forearm tightness before he can join Double-A Chattanooga, while Australian lefty Lewis Thorpe still is recovering from Tommy John surgery he had in April 2015.

New York Mets
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Mike Gibbons, RHP Cameron Griffin, RHP Marcos Molina, RHP Domingo Tapia, LHP Paul Paez, C Nevin Ashley, C Jeff Glenn, C Raywilly Gomez, C Patrick Mazeika, C Natanael Ramos, 2B John Johnson, OF Jared King, OF Tucker Tharp

Dominican righty Marcos Molina pitched just 44 innings in 2015 in between bouts of elbow soreness, then had Tommy John surgery in September. He will return in 2017.

New York Yankees
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Austin DeCarr, RHP Domingo German, RHP Joe Harvey, RHP Ty Hensley, RHP Dallas Martinez, RHP Jose Pena, RHP Angel Rincon, RHP Chad Taylor, LHP Rony Bautista, LHP Richard Bleier, LHP Miguel Sulbaran, LHP Eric Wooten, C Luis Torrens, 1B Matt Snyder
Placed on 60-day DL: LHP Chaz Hebert

Righthander Domingo German missed all of 2015 after having Tommy John surgery, and he dealt with elbow pain this spring. Righties Ty Hensley, a 2012 first-rounder, and Austin DeCarr also missed the 2015 season after having T.J.

Catcher Luis Torrens will join low Class A Charleston when he’s ready, but for now he’s dealing with irritation in the labrum area of his surgically-repaired shoulder. That procedure cost him the entire 2015 season.

Oakland Athletics
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Rodolfo Fernandez, RHP Ryan Gorton, RHP Kevin Johnson, RHP Tanner Peters, LHP Matt Stalcup, C Iolana Akau, 2B Branden Cogswell, SS Yairo Munoz

A foot problem is holding shortstop Yairo Munoz back in extended spring training.

Philadelphia Phillies
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Drew Anderson, RHP Jimmy Cordero, RHP Frank Herrmann, RHP Mark Leiter Jr., RHP Yoervis Medina, LHP Austin Davis, LHP Scott Harris, LHP Brandon Leibrandt

Pittsburgh Pirates
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Brandon Cumpton, RHP Nick Kingham, RHP Casey Sadler, RHP Angel Sanchez, RHP Justin Topa, LHP Robert Zarate

Pitching prospects Brandon Cumpton, Nick Kingham and Casey Sadler are in various stages of recovery from Tommy John surgery. Sadler had his procedure in November, while the other two are farther along the recovery trail.

St. Louis Cardinals
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Will Anderson, RHP Robby Rowland, RHP Jery Then, RHP Tyler Waldron, RHP Luke Weaver, LHP Tim Cooney, LHP Marco Gonzales, LHP Jimmy Reed, C Chris Chinea, 2B Mason Katz, 2B Darren Seferina, SS Juan Herrera

Lefthanders Tim Cooney and Marco Gonzales both dealt with elbow soreness this spring and opened 2016 on the Triple-A Memphis disabled list. One option still on the table for Gonzales, the Cardinals’ top pick in 2013, is Tommy John surgery. Meanwhile, righthander Luke Weaver, the club’s top pick in 2014, fractured his left wrist in an outfield collision and will probably need a month to recover.

San Diego Padres
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Zech Lemond, RHP Seth Lucio, RHP Trey McNutt, RHP Dennis O’Grady, RHP Ben Paullus, RHP Gerardo Reyes, RHP Bryan Verbitsky, LHP Christian Friedrich, C Marcus Greene, 1B Josh Satin
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Seth Streich, RHP Walker Weickel, LHP Matt LaChappa, LHP Travis Radke

San Francisco Giants
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Carlos Alvarado, RHP Ian Gardeck, RHP Jake Smith, LHP Bryce Bandilla, C Travis Higgs, C Ben Turner, 1B Kyle Blanks, 2B John Polonius, OF Daniel Carbonell

Seattle Mariners
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Ramire Cleto, RHP Tyler Knigge, RHP Lance Thonvold, LHP Matt Clancy, LHP Danny Hultzen, LHP Brad Mills, LHP Jake Zokan, 1B Dan Paolini, 1B Ryan Uhl, 2B Jordan Cowan
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Rafael Pineda

Tampa Bay Rays
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Fernando Baez, RHP Lenny Linsky, RHP Nick Sawyer, RHP Burch Smith, RHP Neil Wagner, LHP Grayson Garvin, LHP Justin Marks, LHP Jonny Venters, C Justin O’Conner, 2B Ryan Brett, SS Andrew Velazquez

The Rays signed hard-throwing relievers Neil Wagner and Jonny Venters to two-year, minor league contracts after they had Tommy John surgery in 2015. If they make full recoveries, both are talented enough to factor for Tampa Bay down the stretch in 2016.

Texas Rangers
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Anthony Carter, RHP Tyler Ferguson, RHP Nick Gardewine, RHP Michael Matuella, C Carlos Maldonado, 1B Ike Davis, OF Royce Bolinger, OF Jose Gonzalez
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Dario Beltre, RHP Jake Lemoine, RHP Ricardo Rodriguez

Righthander Michael Matuella, whom the Rangers made a third-round pick last June, had Tommy John surgery in April 2015 while still attending Duke.

Toronto Blue Jays
Placed on 7-day DL:
RHP Taylor Cole, RHP Blake McFarland, RHP Jon Wandling, C Derrick Chung, C Max Pentecost, 1B L.B. Dantzler, 3B Emilio Guerrero, 3B Mitch Nay, OF Austin Davis

Catcher Max Pentecost will be out for an indefinite amount of time as he recovers from a second career shoulder surgery. The 11th overall pick in 2014 has logged just 25 career games to this point.

RHP Tim Alderson, RHP Bronson Arroyo, RHP Robert Benincasa, RHP Michael Brady, RHP Neil Holland, RHP Jose Morales, RHP Brian Rauh, LHP Hector Silvestre, LHP Kylin Turnbull, C Devin Ivany, C Andruth Ramirez, C Adderling Ruiz, 1B Jake Mayers, OF Drew Vettleson, OF Brenden Webb
