The Orioles didn’t waste time optioning 23-year-old reliever Jason Garcia to minor league camp after he walked five and allowed three hits in his first four spring innings. Baltimore carried him all season in 2015 as a Rule 5 pick, but with Tommy John surgery in his recent past, the flame-throwing Garcia could use the development time.
After selecting and keeping major league Rule 5 picks like Ryan Flaherty, Garcia and T.J. McFarland, the Orioles seem poised to keep this year’s Rule 5 selection: outfielder Joey Rickard. He has gone 15-for-42 (.357) in 18 games this spring, with five extra-base hits, five walks and three steals.

Triple-A Colorado Springs will open with the top position prospect (Orlando Arcia) and top pitching prospect (Jorge Lopez) in the Brewers system. Both are on target for in-season callups to Milwaukee if they perform well in the Pacific Coast League.
Making half his starts at the hitter-friendly environment of Colorado Springs presents a challenge for Lopez. The Sky Sox pitching staff last year recorded a 5.01 ERA, and its top starter prospect, righthander Taylor Jungmann, ran up a 6.37 ERA in 59 innings for the club. Once promoted to the majors, Jungmann recorded a 4.15 ERA in 119 innings with the Brewers.
