Christian Friedrich and Matt Thornton are only the latest lefthanders with big league experience signed by the Padres to minor league deals this offseason. San Diego previously had signed four other southpaws with major league time: Ryan Buchter, Michael Kirkman, Daniel Moskos and Scott Snodgress. They also agreed to terms with minor league free agents Ramon Benjamin and Buddy Baumann, the latter receiving a 40-man roster spot courtesy of a major league contract.

Why did the Padres become so fixated on lefthanders? The club’s five primary relievers in 2015 all threw righthanded, and the the three lefty relievers San Diego did use—Frank Garces, Chris Rearick and Marc Rzepczynski—combined to allow 10.3 hits, 1.8 home runs and 6.1 walks per nine innings over a combined 72 appearances.

The improved Minor League Free Agent Tracker now keeps track of more free agent types, so you can easily view the Padres’ entire offseason activity in one place, provided you’re not looking for 40-man roster moves or trades.
