The Red Sox optioned sophomore Blake Swihart to Triple-A Pawtucket not because of any disaffection they harbored for the 24-year-old catcher, but because Christian Vazquez, who missed 2015 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, is an elite pitch-framer. Red Sox correspondent Alex Speier reports that Swihart will learn to play left field in the International League to make him more flexible. He won’t be the first Boston youngster to switch positions: shortstop Xander Bogaerts played a lot of third base as a rookie in 2014, while second baseman Mookie Betts transitioned to center field full time in 2015.
In this piece, Speier makes an interesting point regarding Vazquez’s pitch-framing skills and how they could be negatively impacting other aspects of his defensive game.

Double-A Hartford righthander Antonio Senzatela left his April 14 start with shoulder tightness. He reportedly struggled to get him arm loose for the start in Portland, Maine.
Cody Decker leads all active minor league batters with a .526 slugging percentage and .874 OPS. Those rates can only increase if the Rockies assign the 29-year-old first baseman to Triple-A Albuquerque. Decker has prior Pacific Coast League experience at Tucson, El Paso and Omaha.

The Blue Jays signed 6-foot-10 lefthander Tyler Olander, a former basketball forward at Connecticut, in late March, and now Toronto has signed another amateur pitcher with a multi-sport background but limited recent baseball experience.
Former South Florida quarterback Bobby Eveld, however, has more recently been on the radar of baseball scouts. Back in 2010, the Mets selected Eveld in the 50th round of the draft out of Jesuit High in Tampa but didn’t sign him. Back then he was a catcher. Now he is pursuing a career as a 6-foot-5 righthander.
