Arizona Fall League Prospect Report — October 19, 2021

Austin Wells, C, Yankees — Wells was the Yankees’ first selection in the 2020 draft and spent all of his first pro season reinforcing his credentials as a hitter. His numbers this season—.264/.390/.476 with 16 homers—were especially impressive when one considers that Wells played just 71 games in college due to the pandemic and his status as a draft-eligible sophomore. On Monday, Wells had a loud game with Surprise, collecting a single, two doubles and a triple in five at-bats. The effort was Wells’ second game of four or more hits this season. The last came on Sept. 5, when he collected five hits against Greensboro.

Logan O’Hoppe, C, Phillies — Wells wasn’t the only catcher who showed out in the Surprise-Peoria tilt. On the other side, Phillies prospect O’Hoppe racked up three hits, including a double, and drove home all three of his team’s runs. The 21-year-old, whom the Phillies selected in the 23rd round of the 2018 draft out of high school in New York, made it from High-A Jersey Shore to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. His 17 homers were tied for second in the system behind only outfielder Jhailyn Ortiz

Matt Wallner, OF, Twins — Wallner missed two months of the year after surgery to remove the hamate bone in his right wrist. So far, he’s using the AFL to make up for lost time. The powerful outfielder went 3-for-5 with a home run—his second of the Fall League—on Monday in his team’s loss to Scottsdale. The home run left the bat at 97.8 mph and traveled an estimated 393 feet to the opposite field. Not to be outdone, Wallner also had a 109.8 mph line out in the game.

Jose Tena, SS, Guardians — Tena is part of a highly talented group of middle-infield prospects in the Cleveland system. The 20-year-old spent the entire season at High-A Lake County, where he collected 25 doubles and 16 homers along with 10 stolen bases. His 117 strikeouts against 27 walks sticks out as a red flag. He was 2-for-5 with a double on Monday and produced three batted balls with exit velocities of better than 100 mph.

Cole Waites, RHP, Giants — The San Francisco reliever threw just 13 pitches in 0.1 innings on Monday, but he made an impression. The righthanded South Alabama product not only threw the game’s hardest pitch (98.8 mph), but also threw all of his pitches with better than 7 feet of extension, topping out at 7.4 feet.  Just 45 qualified big leaguers had average extensions in 2021 of better than 7 feet.
