Wrapping Up Day One Of Underclass Area Code Games

NORWALK, Calif.—The underclass edition of the 2016 Area Code Games began on Wednesday at Cerritos College. The showcase highlights the best freshman and sophomore prospects in the country. Participating teams are the Brewers, White Sox, Nationals, Athletics and Texas Rangers.

Games continue through Friday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Game One

The White Sox defeated the Brewers 5-4 to open the underclass games. Grant Richardson (Bishop Dwenger High, Fort Wayne, Ind.) went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI for the White Sox. Jarred Kelenic (Waukesha (Wis.) West High) added a double, a run, and an RBI.

The Brewers’ Julian Boyd (St. John Bosco High, Bellflower, Calif.) went 3-4 with one RBI and one run.

Game Two

The Athletics beat the Nationals 10-3 in the day’s second game.

Drew Walling (R.A. Long High, Longview, Wash.) of the A’s struck out eight in four innings. Jason Brandow (Vintage High, Napa, Calif.) added two RBIs and scored two runs.

For the Nationals, Jeremiah Jackson (St. Luke’s Episcopal High, Mobile, Ala.) had an RBI double and scored a run.

Game Three

The Rangers shut out the Athletics 10-0 to close out the first day of action.

Mason Englert (Forney (Texas) High) pitched four shutout innings and had seven strikeouts. Bobby Witt Jr. (Heritage High, Colleyville, Texas)—son of the former major league pitcher—added a double and a run while going 3-for-4. Hunter Watson (Denison (Texas) High) also added an RBI and a double while going 2-for-5.
