Spring Training MLB Prospect Report—March 9, 2021
Bobby Witt Jr., SS, Royals — Witt was the story of Monday, as he cranked a home run measured at 484 feet. Whether it actually would have traveled 460 feet, 480 feet or 500 feet is less important than the utter acknowledgement that it was a massive home run, and yet another reminder that even though Witt has yet to play a game above rookie ball (thanks pandemic), he’s not all that far from Kansas City. Witt also slid to second base late in this game. It’s a position he’s occasionally played going back to his days with Team USA when he shared the infield with Brice Turang, and it gives Kansas City an option of eventually putting him there if it wants to keep Adalberto Mondesi at shortstop.
Kwang-Hyun Kim, LHP, Cardinals — It’s still early in spring training, but Kim was rocked for the second time in two spring training starts. This time he gave up six hits and four earned runs in two innings, as his spring training ERA climbed to 21.00. Opponents are now hitting .556 against him, which seems almost impossible. Kim’s velocity has yet to bounce back to the 87-93 mph range he showed during his very effective 2021 season. Kim is not a fireballer, and his ability to spot multiple pitches around the zone and be deceptive has more to do with his success than anything. But if he’s sitting 87-89 mph as he did on Monday, everything plays less effectively than it does when he’s bumping 92-93 mph whenever he needs it.
Taylor Trammell, OF, Mariners — Trammell doubled on Monday, giving him his fourth extra-base hit of the spring in just 12 plate appearances. His .909 slugging percentage offers a reminder that it’s not just Jarred Kelenic who is on the precipice of earning a job in Seattle’s outfield.
Tejay Antone, RHP, Reds — Don’t sleep on Antone. He already was a revelation for the Reds in 2020 as he reworked his delivery and turned himself into a solid MLB starter. His stuff is even better this spring. Antone worked three scoreless innings on Monday, but it was how he did it that was even more impressive. Antone didn’t throw a fastball softer than 95 mph in his three innings and topped out at 98. He threw 27 of his 37 pitches for strikes and got nine called strikes.
