Spring Training MLB Prospect Report—March 3, 2021

Atlanta Braves

—No. 2 prospect Ian Anderson turned in a solid performance in his first spring start, allowing three hits and a walk and striking out two in two scoreless innings to earn the win. The 22-year-old righthander is expected to compete for National League rookie of the year honors after an excellent debut in 2020.

Boston Red Sox

—No. 5 prospect Jarren Duran hit a towering blast to right field for his first home run of the spring in the third inning. The 24-year-old outfielder has hit just eight home runs in 199 minor league games, but focused last summer on adjusting his swing to generate more power.

—No. 17 prospect Garrett Whitlock struck out two and allowed one hit in two scoreless innings of work against the Rays. The 24-year-old righthander has a good chance of sticking in Boston’s rotation after the team acquired him from the Yankees with the fourth overall pick in the 2020 Rule 5 draft.

Chicago Cubs

—No. 5 prospect Adbert Alzolay struck out one in a perfect inning of work against the Royals. The 25-year-old righthander will slot into the rotation again after starting four times in 2020.

Chicago White Sox

—No. 1 prospect Andrew Vaughn hit his first home run of the spring, a three-run shot to left field, and scored twice.

—No. 9 prospect Luis Gonzalez collected two hits and drove in one run. The 25-year-old outfielder will start the season in the minors after appearing in three big league games in 2020.

Cincinnati Reds

—No. 5 prospect Hunter Greene saw his first live game action since 2018 after having Tommy John surgery, giving up three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one in an inning of work.

Detroit Tigers

—Outfielder Akil Baddoo, whom the Tigers acquired with the third overall pick in the Rule 5 draft from the Twins, picked up his second hit of spring training on an RBI double to left field in the second inning against the Pirates. The Tigers No. 17 prospect is fighting to make the team as a reserve outfielder.

—No. 3 prospect Casey Mize struck out three batters in two scoreless innings to earn the win in his first spring start, but the control issues that plagued him last season (4.1 BB/9) remained. He walked three of the nine batters he faced.

Kansas City Royals

—No. 2 prospect Daniel Lynch struggled in his first appearance, allowing three runs on three hits, walking three and striking out one in 1.2 innings against the Cubs.

—No. 19 prospect Edward Olivares hit his first homer of the spring, a two-run shot to left field in the seventh inning. The 24-year-old outfielder appeared in 18 games for the Royals last season after arriving in August from the Padres in the trade for righthander Trevor Rosenthal.

Los Angeles Angels

—No. 4 prospect Reid Detmers, the seventh overall pick in the 2020 draft, pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out one.

Top 10 East Division Prospect Graduates Based On Updated BA Grades

We assess the future value potential of the top graduated prospects from the 2022 rookie classes of the American and National league East divisions.

Miami Marlins

—No. 2 prospect JJ Bleday made an outstanding throw from the right field warning track to double off a runner on first in the third inning against the Cardinals. Bleday’s arm is one of his four tools which are above-average or better, and he could see time in Miami by the end of the season.

—No. 9 prospect Braxton Garrett pitched two scoreless innings, walking three and striking out one. Despite making his big league debut in 2020, Garrett has made only one start in the upper minors and likely won’t break camp with the big league club.

San Diego Padres

—No. 2 prospect CJ Abrams showed off his 80-grade speed with a triple to right field against the Diamondbacks. He scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly.

Seattle Mariners

—No. 6 prospect Taylor Trammell drove in a run with a double in the seventh inning, but was ruled out after heading to third.

Texas Rangers

—No. 1 prospect Josh Jung pinch hit for Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the fifth inning and gave the Rangers a boost with an RBI single to center field in his first at-bat of the spring.
