Spring Training MLB Prospect Report—March 26, 2021

Eli White, CF, Rangers — On the day that he learned he has made the Rangers’ Opening Day roster, White went 2-for-2 with a triple to celebrate. With a .323/.421/.528 stat line, White has done an excellent job of staking a claim to the Rangers’ center field job. Texas’ manager Chris Woodward has told Delino DeShields Jr. that he is not making the roster. White is likely to play all over the outfield this season.

Adolis Garcia, OF, Rangers — With Khris Davis (quad injury) sidelined as one of the many Rangers expected to start the year on the injured list, Garcia could be a candidate to fill that spot. Garcia went 3-for-4 with his third home run and has now hit .478/.462/1.000 this spring. Working against Garcia is the fact that he’s not on the 40-man roster.

Greg Jones, SS, Rays — Jones’ first hit of the spring was a big one. Jones homered off Tyler Matzek. Jones didn’t get any at-bats with the big league club last year, so this was his first home run and his first hit at major league spring training.

J.B. Bukauskas, RHP, D-Backs — Bukauskas faced two batters and struck out both of them. It continued what may be the most effective spring any pitcher has had. Bukauskas has faced 17 batters. None of them have reached base—Bukauskas is working right now on 5.2 innings of a multi-game spring training perfect game. But he’s also been extremely effective at keeping them from even making contact. He’s now struck out 12 of those 17 batters.

Ryan Mountcastle, LF, Orioles — Mountcastle hit his fourth home run of the spring, which puts him among the top 10 home run hitters this spring. Mountcastle remains somewhat allergic to walks, which explains his .295 on-base percentage, but a .620 slugging percentage offers a hint that he’s still having a spring that could spring him into a big 2021.

Casey Mize, RHP, Tigers — It’s been a forgettable March for Mize, but he was better on Thursday. Mize struck out nine of the 19 batters he faced. He did allow five hits and two runs in four innings, but that was a solid step forward after his struggles in his previous two starts.

Alek Manoah, RHP, Blue Jays — Manoah is rivaling J.B. Bukauskas in lights-out March’s. Manoah struck out four in two hitless innings. He has now struck out 15 of the 24 batters who have stepped into the box against him, while sitting 95-97 mph and flashing an impressive slider.
