RoboScout's Prospect Names To Know, May 14, 2023

Roboscout Copy (1)

Editor's Note: All statistics listed below in the tables are peak projections over the course of a full MLB season.

For this week’s RoboScout article, we’ve added a slight tweak to the formula so the rankings have more movement than would normally be expected. The reason for that is that we’ve blended in (25%) minor league Statcast and stuff metrics data to help provide additional data-based insights into prospect performance. As per usual, RoboScout measures performance relative to age and level, and the pertinent Statcast metrics (generally contact, contact quality and swing decisions at various weightings for hitters; and stuff grades for pitchers) are adjusted based on their data compared to their same-age and same-level peers.

In the level writeups below, I’ll try to identify the players near the top of the list who had the biggest adjustments when the “underlying” data was blended in. As is tradition, I’ll start with Low-A and work my way up to Triple-A. All data is through Friday’s games.

Low-A

Top Hitters per RoboScout (minimum 40 plate appearances) in Low-A are:
1. Jackson Holliday (BAL No. 3 prospect)
2. Moises Ballesteros (CHC No. 16 prospect
3. Ryan Clifford (HOU No. 20 prospect)
4. Samuel Basallo (BAL No. 15 prospect)
5. Cole Young (SEA No. 2 prospect)
6. Creed Willems (BAL unranked)
7. Nate Furman (CLE unranked)
8. Leonardo Bernal (STL No. 12 prospect)
9. Luis Lara (MIL No. 12 prospect)
10. Graham Pauley (SDP unranked)
11. Onil Perez (SFG unranked)
12. Maick Collado (CLE unranked)
13. Nelson Rada (LAA No. 9 prospect)
14. Daylen Lile (WSN No. 27 prospect)
15. Jared Serna (NYY unranked)
Honorable Mentions: Cam Collier (CIN), Justin Crawford (PHI), Roman Anthony (BOS), J.T. Williams (NYM), Enmanuel Terrero (PIT)

Entering the top 10 for the first time is Lara (MIL). As Josh Norris noted in the first week of May, the Brewers aggressively assigned a young international signing to full-season ball, reminiscent of an approach they took last year.

The twitchy outfielder—who will be 18 years old for the entire season—has more walks than strikeouts and, although not showing too much power yet, should gain sneaky pop (from both sides of the plate) as he grows while playing a solid center field. Arrow up.

Pauley is bursting his way onto the RoboScout charts. Because he is older for Low-A, he is less loved by the raw RoboScout algorithm (RawboScout?) despite being named the California League’s hitter of the month for April. However, when Statcast is folded into the model, he enters the top 10. Under the hood, we can see why: his contact rate is plus, his chase rate is plus, and his 90th percentile (and maximum) exit velocities are exactly average for a 22-year-old. In 2022 at Duke, the 13th-round draft pick had more walks than strikeouts (showing similar rates to Zach Neto) but his power and barrel rates trailed many of the other third base draftees (Neto, Jace Jung, Ryan Cermak, Peyton Graham). In 2023, Pauley has managed to direct more of his balls in play at the optimal launch angle zone than in previous years, leading to excellent results despite the average batted ball velocities. This is reminiscent of Kyle Manzardo, who also had exit velocities that were not as impressive as those of his slugging peers, but because most of his harder-hit balls were in the “barrel” launch angle zone, he generated fantastic hitting production. Incidentally, Manzardo has raised his 90th percentile exit velocity year-over-year, showing that bat speed can develop without sacrificing a great hitting approach. Pauley should be promoted to Fort Wayne soon—and we’ll see how he performs against more age-appropriate competition.

Top Pitchers per RoboScout (minimum 10 innings) in Low-A:
1. Steven Zobac (KCR No. 29 prospect)
2. David Sandlin (KCR unranked)
3. Blake Adams (COL unranked)
4. Jacob Misiorowski (MIL No. 7 prospect)
5. JR Ritchie (ATL No. 4 prospect)
6. Justin Lange (NYY unranked)
7. Orion Kerkering (PHI No. 25 prospect)
8. Hayden Birdsong (SFG unranked)
9. Liam Simon (SFG unranked)
10. Frank Mozzicato (KCR No. 5 prospect)
Honorable Mentions: Cade Horton (CHC), Owen Murphy (ATL), Dalton Rogers (BOS), Aidan Curry (TEX), Wen Hui Pan (PHI), Maddux Burns (LAD)

With the consideration of stuff metrics, a few interesting names appear in the Low-A ranks. Last year at South Florida, Orion Kerkering predominantly showed a fastball/slider mix before the Phillies drafted him in the fifth round. In Clearwater this year, pitching strictly out of the bullpen, Kerkering has seen his fastball jump up to 97-98 mph, topping out at 100 mph. The slider has also gained around three mph. After rendering his Low-A competition hapless, the Phillies have moved him up to High-A. I don’t recommend speculating on relief pitchers that often. But you could definitely do worse than Kerkering, though keep in mind, he will not likely be a major league high-leverage option until at least 2025.

An interesting name is Adams (COL), who was the California League’s pitcher of the month for April. Although it’s not bad fantasy advice to generally avoid Rockies pitchers altogether, the 13th-round draftee has been undeniably solid this year. He throws a four-seam fastball (50% usage) at 91-93 mph with 18 inches of induced vertical break that is plus on stuff models. His 12-to-6 curveball has good downward bite and his mid-80s slider generates a ton of ground balls, getting average grades on both pitches from the most enthusiastic scouts. In his first two starts in May, he faced 23 and 24 batters, respectively, and struck out 18 while issuing no free passes, showing so far that he can handle a starter’s workload. The results are undeniable but I’m hesitant to invest yet until he’s shown that his secondaries can get higher level competition out. He's a watch list candidate.

High-A

Top Hitters per RoboScout (minimum 40 plate appearances) in High-A:
1. Junior Caminero (TBR No. 8 prospect)
2. Ignacio Alvarez (ATL No. 15 prospect)
3. Jonatan Clase (SEA No. 12 prospect)
4. Jackson Holliday (BAL No. 3 prospect)
5. Javier Vaz (KCR unranked)
6. Yeiner Fernandez (LAD No. 24 prospect)
7. Sterlin Thompson (COL No. 8 prospect)
8. Nathan Martorella (SDP No. 21 prospect)
9. Cayden Wallace (KCR No. 2 prospect)
10. Dalton Rushing (LAD No. 8 prospect)
11. Marcelo Mayer (BOS No. 1 prospect)
12. Juan Brito (CLE No. 16 prospect)
13. Kahlil Watson (MIA No. 15 prospect)
14. Carter Jensen (KCR No. 10 prospect)
15. Austin Gauthier (LAD unranked)
Honorable Mentions: James Wood (WSN), Harry Ford (SEA), Adael Amador (COL), Wilfred Veras (CHW)

With the addition of the Statcast data, the names remain familiar. Some loud performances in the past week from preseason breakout nominees Rushing and Martorella have them entering firmly into the top 10. It’s extremely encouraging to see Watson continuing to put 2022 behind him.

The most conspicuous name on the list—and a name who wasn’t on the Royals Top 30 Prospects list before the season—is Vaz. After being drafted in the 15th round, the second baseman/outfielder had more walks and strikeouts in his professional debut while showing incredible plate discipline. This year, he is playing at the keystone more than on the grass, and continues to show his elite plate discipline. His contact and chase rates are by far the best at the level, though they are driven by his extreme patience: when he chooses to swing, he makes contact. The issue, of course, is that there isn’t too much thump in the bat. The contact quality remains well below-average—he has yet to put a ball in play at 102 mph or higher in his professional career, albeit in fewer than 200 plate appearances—and there’s not much more projection left in his compact physique. Nonetheless, he is still young, his bat path and hand-eye coordination are such that he’s still managed a .200 ISO in his minor league career … and note that Luis Arraez so far in 2023 has a maximum exit velocity of 100.4 mph. He's another watch list name for now.

I also just want to mention a helium name: Victor Scott (STL unranked), who finds himself tied with Jackson Merrill (SDP No. 1 prospect) and Emmanuel Rodriguez (MIN No. 3 prospect) on the High-A RoboScout list. Before the season, Geoff identified him as a sleeper name in the Cardinals organization.

The prescience is impressive as the 22-year-old outfielder has a 144 wRC+ and similar contact rate, chase rate and 90th percentile exit velocity as the aforementioned Merrill. The biggest eye opener, though, is the minor league-leading 24 stolen bases (twice caught) through Friday’s games. Coupled with the plus defense up the middle and the excellent swing decisions (his Z-Swing% minus O-Swing% is in the 98th percentile amongst all minor leaguers with over 60 plate appearances), the fifth-round draft pick out of West Virginia is my deep target this week.

Top Pitchers per RoboScout (minimum 10 innings) in High-A:
1. AJ Smith-Shawver (ATL No. 1 prospect)
2. Ronan Kopp (LAD No. 15 prospect)
3. Chase Hampton (NYY unranked)
4. Noah Cameron (KCR No. 23 prospect)
5. Keider Montero (DET unranked)
6. Tink Hence (STL No. 2 prospect)
7. Dylan Ray (ARI No. 20 prospect)
8. Carson Ragsdale (SFG unranked)
9. Jairo Iriarte (SDP No. 13 prospect)
10. Tyler Mattson (DET unranked)
Honorable Mentions: Yu-Min Lin (ARI), Tyler Thornton (CLE), Kumar Rocker (TEX), Juan Mercedes (SEA)

A high-value target in High-A who might still be available in your league is Hampton. On the heels of his five-inning, nine-strikeout (with only one walk) gem of a performance against Wilmington, he already would have climbed up to No. 7 in the raw RoboScout rankings. When his stuff grades get folded in, he gets an even bigger bump. The bread and butter is his mid-90s four-seamer that has 19 inches of IVB and flat vertical approach angle. The mid-80s slider is also above-average and manages to get a 44% CSW. His curveball has velocity (80 mph), horizontal movement (10”) and spike (-13” IVB) in the same cluster as George Kirby, Tink Hence and Walker Buehler (2022) and grades out already as nearly major league average on Stuff+ models. In all four of his outings in 2023, he’s gone through the order twice, throwing 70 to 86 pitches. If it all clicks, he should be able to be a starter in the Yankees rotation—albeit three years from now—or, minimally, a power bullpen arm.

Prospect Report: Peraza Blasts Two Longballs In Scranton

The Yankees' infielder carded the fourth multi-home run game of the year, a pair of Giants put forth impressive performances and an Angels outfielder is showing remarkable gifts against more experienced competition.

Double-A

Top Hitters per RoboScout (minimum 40 plate appearances) in Double-A:
1. Henry Davis (PIT No. 3 prospect)
2. Jasson Dominguez (NYY No. 3 prospect)
3. Owen Caissie (CHC No. 13 prospect)
4. Luis Matos (SFG No. 5 prospect)
5. Evan Carter (TEX No. 1 prospect)
6. Edgar Quero (LAA No. 4 prospect)
7. Nick Yorke (BOS No. 7 prospect)
8. Hunter Goodman (COL No. 14 prospect)
9. Jackson Chourio (MIL No. 1 prospect)
10. Coby Mayo (BAL No, 10 prospect)
11. Cesar Prieto (BAL No. 25 prospect)
12. Tyler Black (MIL No. 8 prospect)
13. Luisangel Acuna (TEX No. 4 prospect)
14. Pete Crow-Armstrong (CHC No. 1 prospect)
15. Ethan Wilson (PHI No. 9 prospect)
Honorable Mentions: Jorbit Vivas (LAD), Noelvi Marte (CIN), Joey Loperfido (HOU), Colt Keith (DET), Bladimir Restituyo (COL)

The newest top name in Double-A is Davis, and that would be true whether or not I folded in his statcast data. Since the calendar flipped over to May, the catcher has a .393/.485/.750 slash line with two home runs and four doubles. Still playing predominantly behind the plate (17 games at catcher, three games in right field, three at DH), Davis’ contact rate, chase rate and 90th percentile exit velocity are all plus for the level.

The biggest discrepancy between RawboScout and RoboScout when Statcast is blended in belongs to Black, who was third in the raw score but drops to 12th when his underlying Statcast data is gently folded in. The data itself isn’t portending a precipitous drop off in his production, it is merely cooling it off a bit. The swing decisions are excellent but there’s a bit more swing-and-miss than we’d like considering he’s not a true slugger. That being said, the fact that he has stolen 17 bases while only being caught once suggests over 25 stolen bases in the major leagues in his prime years. Again, for a 22-year-old in Double-A to show a peak projection of .250/.336 with 19 home runs and 29 stolen bases (based on this year’s production) is still extremely impressive, even though the Statcast data isn’t currently eye-popping.

Prior to folding in his “stuff”, RoboScout ranked Phillips 14th in Double-A. After folding in his stuff grades, RoboScout propelled him up into the top five. As a reminder, the data is influenced by the well-documented pre-tacked ball in Southern League, but it's impressive notwithstanding the caveat. His four-seamer sits at 96 mph (touching 98 mph) with over 21 inches of induced vertical break (and is very flat). The curveball is low 80s with over 12 inches of sweep and deep dive (-17” IVB). You may note that these are similar numbers to Hampton’s curveball but thrown with even more velocity. Of all the curveballs thrown (minimum 40 thrown) in the major leagues this year, there are none in the same bucket of velocity that have as much vertical and horizontal movement. The closest curve in terms of movement is Seth Lugo’s and he throws it nearly three mph slower than Phillips. You might think that he can’t land it in the zone or can’t compel CSW% but he has a strike rate of just under 50% and a CSW% of 30%. There is no question the stuff is nasty, as evidenced by the 37% K%; it’s the command (11% BB%) that he has to harness. That being said, it is not unheard of to succeed with a walk rate in Double-A in that range: Dylan Cease had a 39% K% and 11% BB% in 2018 at the same age, Cristian Javier in 2019 had a 39% K% and 13% BB% at the same age and Lance McCullers Jr. had a 37% K% and 11% rate in 2015 at age 21, so it’s not a death sentence. In fact, it’s downright good company. As with his former Chattanooga teammate Andrew Abbott, I’d like to see him perform in Triple-A. But I see that coming relatively soon. He is nearing Fantasy Top 100 status for me.
