BA Grade/Risk: 45/High.
Track Record: Smaller in stature without any loud tools, Serna was an unheralded signing out of Mexico for $10,000 in 2019. However, he overachieved at every level and drew the Marlins’ attention enough to trade for him as part of the package for Jazz Chisholm. The Marlins immediately promoted him to Double-A as soon as the trade went through, and he performed serviceably.
Scouting Report: Serna stands an unimposing 5-foot-7 on a good day, and he is not a plus athlete, so it is easy to overlook him as a prospect. However, everything in his performance and advanced data suggests a well-rounded hitter without any major flaws. Despite his size, he uses a big leg kick and fast hands to generate sneaky raw power. Even with the noisy operation, he still maintains above-average contact rates. He shows average swing decisions, but will at times get jumpy on breaking balls down and away. Defensively, he splits time at both middle infield spots, but second base is his long-term home if he is to be an everyday guy. He doesn’t make the plays that more dynamic shortstops can. Serna is an average runner with quick but short strides and doesn’t eat up ground quickly or have big top-end speed.
The Future: Serna projects as a solid offensive super-sub in the Ramon Urias mold or second-division regular at second base. He will likely head to Triple-A to begin 2025, with eyes on making his MLB debut at some point during the season.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: Serna was inked out of Mexico in 2019 but the pandemic canceled the minor league season and pushed his debut until 2021. The righthanded hitter walked more often than he struck out at both stops in the complex leagues. He had a rough introduction to full-season ball in 2022 but rebounded in 2023 with an excellent year across both Class A affiliates.
Scouting Report: Serna is an intriguing hitter who makes sound swing decisions with decent thump but needs to improve the trajectory of his contact. He has quick hands and a quick bat and rarely misses pitches inside the zone. Serna’s chase rate was a bit high, which leads to weak contact on pitches he cannot impact. He did a better job elevating the ball when he was at Low-A but regressed into beating the ball into the ground when he moved to High-A. He projects as an average hitter with below-average power and doesn’t have a frame that looks like it can add much more strength. Serna is a steady defender who could be fringe-average at second base, where his below-average arm is less of an issue because of the new shift restrictions that limit positioning infielders in the outfield.
The Future: The 2024 season will be a big test for Serna, who will reach the upper levels for the first time. His limited defensive profile will mean he needs to hit to his complete potential to reach his ceiling of a bat-first everyday second baseman.
