Rockies shortstop Ethan Holliday needs surgery on a stress fracture in his left foot and will miss the rest of the season, as first reported by MLB’s Thomas Harding. It is unclear when the injury initially occurred or when Holliday will undergo the surgery. He last played on May 20 and was officially placed on the injured list on May 24.

The Rockies drafted Holliday fourth overall in 2025 out of Stillwater High School. He appeared in 18 games after signing, but struggled, hitting .239/.357/.380 with 33 strikeouts in 84 plate appearances for Low-A Fresno. He was better in his return there this year, hitting .262/.395/.557 with nine home runs in 152 plate appearances. There are few questions about his power and ability to impact the baseball, but his contact ability is very inconsistent. He has a 28.3% strikeout rate this year, and his in-zone whiff rate and overall contact rate are below-average.

Holliday’s older brother Jackson is an infielder for the Orioles, and his father Matt came up through the Rockies system before spending the first five years of his career there. He is still young for his class, having only turned 19 in February, but this lost development time is a setback for someone with his profile who needs as much exposure to professional pitching and defensive reps as possible.

Holliday currently slots in as the No. 57 prospect in Baseball America’s Top 100 and the top prospect in the Rockies system.
