Making only his second career start at the level, A’s 19-year-old lefthander Wei-En Lin struck out six batters over 3.1 innings on Thursday for Double-A Midland while allowing just one run, continuing a strong first professional season that has spanned three affiliates. Lin is now 4-5, 3.72 with 117 strikeouts to just 22 walks over 87 innings, the majority split between Low-A Stockton (50 IP) and High-A Lansing (30.1). The A’s signed Lin for $1.3 million last June and he’s been a revelation, showing impressive command over a four-pitch mix that includes a low-90s fastball, two separate breaking balls and an upper-70s changeup that elicited whiffs nearly 60% of the time in the lower minors. Already ranked No. 17 in the A’s system, expect Lin to move up even more over the offseason.
