Explaining Baseball America’s New Star Rating System For High School Recruits

0

Baseball America is introducing a new recruiting rating system to provide a clearer, more accessible way to evaluate high school players and their potential at the college level.

Our star ratings will group players into tiers based on their projected impact in college baseball, helping fans understand not just where a player might play, but how he is likely to contribute once he gets there. They will highlight the future stars of college baseball—players who have the potential to be difference-makers at the highest levels of the college game and beyond.

Within each class, star ratings are designed to capture a wide spectrum of talent, from the elite high school prospects at the very top to the broader group of players who project to contribute at the Division I level. While players within the same tier can vary in skill set and long-term outcomes, each star level reflects a distinct profile in terms of ability, upside and expected role in college baseball.

Here’s a look at how each star rating class is determined.

Five Stars ★★★★★

Quick Snapshot: Five-star prospects are elite, blue-chip players who often become high MLB Draft picks out of high school. The ones who reach campus form an exclusive group of players who project as impact performers with star potential on the national landscape of college baseball.

Five-star recruits represent the very best of top-tier high school prospects and project as elite, impact players at the highest levels of college baseball. These players have the ability to become All-Americans and serve as foundational pieces for top programs. They combine advanced skill, physical readiness and performance history that suggest a high likelihood of making a major impact early in their college careers.

The reality in baseball is that many five-star recruits won’t make it to college baseball because they have the talent to go within the first three rounds of the MLB Draft out of high school. Even in a strong year for high school players, we expect fewer than 15 five-star recruits to get to college, making it an exclusive group. When five-stars do get to college, they are the types who project to be the most valuable players in college baseball. Think of a player the caliber of Dylan Crews, Roch Cholowsky or Kumar Rocker when they were in high school, or Dax Whitney, Derek Curiel and Jack Bauer from more recent classes. While there will be five-star players who won’t pan out, these are blue-chip prospects who have a chance to be immediate impact players.

There is no fixed number of five-star prospects in a given class. Talent varies from year to year, so years with stronger high-end high school talent will have more five-star recruits, and years when it’s lighter at the top will have fewer five-stars. Ultimately, a player’s talent level determines whether he is a five-star rather than a predetermined quota.

Four Stars ★★★★☆

Quick Snapshot: Four-star prospects are advanced recruits with significant MLB Draft potential out of high school but will often make it to campus. They form the backbone of top recruiting classes and include many players who project as early-impact performers with the potential to be high draft picks out of college.

Four-star players represent a select group of high-end recruits with the talent to develop into a multi-year starter as a high-impact position player or starting pitcher at a major college program. While not quite at the level of those with five stars, four-star players have a significantly higher probability of getting to school instead of signing with an MLB team out of high school.

Given how many five-star recruits won’t get to campus, many of the four-star players will be the top freshmen in the country. Some have the ability to be immediate contributors, though many will need more time to grow into those roles. At the high end, expect future All-Americans, college stars and high draft picks out of college to emerge from the four-star group, while others will settle in as solid contributors at power or mid-major programs.

At the top of what four-star recruits can become, think of players like Cameron Flukey, Gavin Grahovac, Caden Sorell, Brendan Lawson or Zion Rose coming out of high school.

Three Stars ★★★☆☆

Quick Snapshot: Three-star prospects represent a wider pool of talent with skill sets to contribute at both the college level and potentially as professionals. Many have the upside to grow into strong players at high-end college programs, but outcomes vary more widely relative to four- and five-stars.

Compared to four-star players, three-star recruits represent a talented but broader segment of promising Division I college players. While four-stars have a strong likelihood of becoming high-impact college players, many three-stars have that upside but with less certainty and a wider range of outcomes. Three-stars have traits that make them pro prospects but are likely to make it to campus and translate well to the college game.

These players have a chance to be immediate contributors as freshmen, though most will need time to grow into those roles, especially if it’s at a premier program. There is a larger band of players that fit into this category, from players with more polished skills ready to make a quicker impact in college to deeper projection types who have the upside to develop into an above-average starter at a good college program and have value as pro prospects but might need more physical or skill development to get there.

There are players in the three-star group who will develop into players who hit at the top or middle of a good college lineup, become strong starting pitchers and, in some cases, potentially break out to the level of an All-American and early-round draft pick out of college. However, there’s more volatility in what direction their development will take compared to the four- and five-star recruits.

Star Ratings For Underclassmen

We will be conservative with our star ratings for underclass players. The younger players are, the fewer five-star and even four-star ratings there will be.

Most players with the talent level to earn a star rating will begin as three-stars to go along with a handful of four-stars and an even smaller group of five-stars. High school players can change a lot from their sophomore to junior to senior seasons. For that reason, we prioritize a long-term view, where we would rather start conservatively on players’ star ratings and move them up as they develop rather than assign overly aggressive ratings too soon. As players develop and get evaluated against stronger competition, they can earn their way up to the next star tier as we update our evaluations.

Our star ratings transfer cleanly across years. In other words, if a junior rates as a five-star, he would still fit within the five-star group if he reclassified up to become a senior. That said, it will be rare to have a sophomore with a five-star rating, and there still won’t be many juniors with a five-star designation.
