A three-year starter at second base for Virginia, Godbout is one of the better contact bats in the 2025 class. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound righthanded hitter put together a tremendous sophomore campaign in 2024 when he hit .372 with nine home runs and 18 doubles, but regressed slightly in his platform draft season in 2025. He’s a career .321/.415/.514 hitter with Virginia with nearly as many walks (69) as strikeouts (70), and he also has an extensive track record hitting for high averages in a number of summer wood bat leagues. Godbout’s profile and pro value are built around his bat-to-ball skills. He’s a pesky hitter who’s extremely difficult to strike out. He owns an 86% overall contact rate and a 91% in-zone contact rate for his career with strong hand-eye coordination and a tremendous feel for the barrel. He’s very much a contact-over-power offensive profile, with below-average raw power and only modest top-end exit velocities. Godbout’s home runs have almost exclusively come to the pull side in college, and he’s unlikely to tap into more than 15 home runs per season without a change in approach or sacrificing some contact. Godbout is a fringy runner with short, choppy strides. He’s a reliable defender at second base who should be able to make all the routine plays with enough arm strength for the position.

Track Record: After a standout sophomore season where he slashed .372/.472/.645, Godbout’s numbers ticked back as a junior and he hit .309/.397/.497. Still, he continued to show elite strike-zone judgment and rare bat-to-ball abilities with an 8% strikeout rate. The Red Sox believed Godbout could tap into more power, and took him in the second round before signing him for just over $1.09 million. Godbout was one of Boston’s few draftees to make his pro debut in 2025, impressing in a 13-game stint with High-A Greenville sandwiched around a hamstring injury.
Scouting Report: Godbout attacks pitches in the zone with a compact, direct swing whose efficiency allows him to swing at strikes and handle fastballs. In his brief pro sample, he paired a chase rate under 17% with an 88% in-zone contact rate. His exit velocities in college were below major league average, but the Red Sox believe Godbout will respond well to strength and bat speed training that may turn his natural ability to pull the ball in the air into extra bases and homers, especially at Fenway. Godbout played some shortstop in 2025, but he’s most likely a second baseman or perhaps third baseman whose primary value will be his bat.
The Future: Godbout’s advanced approach could make him a candidate to open 2026 in Double-A. If he makes strength gains to improve his pull-side power, his best-case scenario would be as an everyday infielder whose in-game power surpasses his raw power.

Godbout cemented himself as one of the most polished pure hitters in the class during the 2024 spring season with Virginia. After a solid freshman season in 2023, Godbout hit .372/.472/.645 with 18 doubles, nine home runs, 47 RBIs and 29 walks to 20 strikeouts as a sophomore. He has a simple setup in the box with plenty of quickness in his hands. Godbout has excellent hand-eye coordination and plus feel for the barrel. He posted a 95% contact rate against fastballs and a 92% overall in-zone contact rate in 2024 but also grew into more power and flashed impact to the pull side. He’s a fine but unremarkable defender who should be able to make the routine plays at second base.

A strong Virginia commit, Godbout is seen as a projectable shortstop who likely needs time in college to get stronger. He’s helped himself with a strong summer in the Futures Collegiate League. There are thought to be a few teams who may be willing to meet what was seen as a sizable asking price. If they do, they are counting on him filling into power and bat speed that isn’t there yet. Whether a team can do that in a minor league system that has eliminated short-season and non-complex rookie league teams is an open question.
