View Draft Report
A thickly-built, 6-foot-3, 200-pound righthander, Huggins certainly benefitted from having third baseman Cam Collier on the same Chipola (Fla.) JC team this spring—but he’s a strong pitching prospect and performed at a high level in 2022. He led Chipola in innings (73) and posted a 2.96 ERA over 14 starts, while striking out 97 batters and walking 32. Huggins throws a fastball in the low 90s that has been up to 96 and pairs the pitch with a hard, mid-80s slider that has good downer bite and a firm changeup in the upper 80s. He carries plenty of reliever risk and might be better going straight to a bullpen role at the next level, but he’ll also still be just 19 years old on draft day.

Track Record: The Reds drafted Huggins in the fourth round in 2022 out of Chipola (Fla.) JC, but Tommy John surgery in 2023 limited him to just 43.2 innings entering 2025. He returned to Low-A Daytona for a third stint and posted a 3.69 ERA over 63.1 innings before the A’s acquired him at the trade deadline in the Miguel Andujar deal and assigned him to High-A Lansing.
Scouting Report: Huggins has long shown premium arm strength. His fastball averaged 93 mph in 2025, sat 95-96 at times in Lansing and touched 97. He pairs the velocity with plus extension and a high release that creates unusual angles. His upper-80s slider flashes plus and was his most effective offering in 2025. Huggins emerged from rehab in better shape and reintroduced an upper-80s changeup. The pitch is less refined but intriguing, generating whiffs nearly half the time, and the A’s believe it has room to grow. They may also look to add another breaking ball. Huggins walked 10.1% of hitters and his fairly rigid delivery and arm stroke inhibited his strike-throwing.
The Future: Huggins entered the offseason Rule 5-eligible but has yet to reach the upper minors. His 2025 progress and unusual release traits give him a chance to remain on a starter track for at least another season, though his fastball-slider combination could play up in relief.
