Holton is a short and filled-out lefthander with a 5-foot-11, 191-pound frame and three years of starting track record in the Southeastern Conference with Vanderbilt. He was a prominent high school prospect in Savannah, Ga., and largely lived up to those expectations in college. He owns a career 4.10 ERA in 200 innings and 39 starts, with a 29% strikeout rate and 9.2% walk rate. He throws from a high three-quarters slot with a crossfire landing and has shown solid feel for a four-pitch mix. Holton’s fastball sits in the 93-94 mph range and will touch 97-98 at peak, but he does a nice job establishing the pitch for strikes to set up the rest of his arsenal. His mix includes an upper-70s curveball with solid depth and sweep, a hard slider in the mid 80s with tighter, shorter break and a mid-80s changeup. Holton uses his curveball and changeup as his primary offspeed pitches against righthanders and goes to the slider as his most frequently used offspeed weapon against lefties. While Holton might not have a single overwhelming pitch, he has a solid track record as a starter in the best conference in the country, a deep pitch mix and solid-average control of a deep arsenal.
