Track Record: Mayer spent two seasons with St. Charles (Mo.) JC before transferring to Missouri for his junior season. He missed all of 2023 with injuries. He returned to Missouri for a fourth season and made 17 appearances for the Tigers. The Astros drafted Mayer in the 16th round in 2024. Mayer debuted with Low-A Fayetteville following the draft and returned there to begin 2025. After five appearances he was promoted to High-A Asheville. Mayer reached Double-A Corpus Christi by July. He was transferred to the development list in late August.
Scouting Report: A physically mature righthander, Mayer is an athletic mover on the mound who generates above-average extension. His low release height and high spin efficiency allow him to create a deceptively flat vertical approach angle on his fastball, which allows him to generate whiffs at high rates. Mayer mixes five pitches: a four-seam fastball, cutter, curveball, sweeper and changeup. He sits 92-93 mph and touches 95 on his fastball, but the pitch plays up due to its unique traits. Mayer’s curveball is his most-thrown offspeed pitch and sits in the high 70s with heavy two-plane break. His sweeper is thrown nearly 1-for-1 to his curveball, with ride and heavy sweep. Mayer’s upper-80s cutter is a bridge pitch that sets up his pair of bigger breaking pitches. Mayer uses his mid-80s changeup, which has good vertical and velocity separation, exclusively to lefthanded hitters. He shows average command and the ability to land all of his pitches for strikes. Mayer is still stretching out as a starter, and the Astros were cautious with his innings, adding a bit of relief risk to Mayer’s profile.
The Future: Mayer has a starter’s arsenal and unique traits. He’ll look to build up his innings, but he has No. 4 starter upside.
