Track Record: Nunez signed with the Padres of high school as an infielder in the 29th round in 2019, but when he was released in 2021 he was granted eligibility to play at Division II Tampa. He hit there for three years before trying his hand at pitching late in 2024 for Tampa’s D-II national championship team. He signed with the Mets as an undrafted free agent that year, dominated pro ball and was part of the Orioles’ return for Cedric Mullins at the 2025 trade deadline. After the season, Nunez would have been a minor league free agent but was added to the Orioles’ 40-man roster instead.
Scouting Report: Nunez’s pitch mix is the type one would draw up when designing a modern pitcher, which makes sense considering he only just got on the mound. His four-seamer gets weak contact at the top of the zone in the 95-97 mph range, while hitters pound his two-seamer into the ground. What truly separates Nunez is his natural feel for spin and for commanding his changeup. He throws an 89-92 mph cutter as his primary pitch to set the stage for a plus mid-80s sweeper he uses to expand the zone against righthanded hitters and an outstanding kick-changeup that he deploys against lefties. His control is good enough for a high-leverage role—he closed games at Double-A and Triple-A—but he needs to dial in the strike zone in 2026 to ensure that is the case.
The Future: The Orioles have produced plenty of unheralded bullpen stars this decade. Nunez could be the next that they put into a high-leverage role in relief, and he could compete for a job in the big leagues in spring training.
