If you take a glance at King’s stats at Middle Tennessee State, you may wonder how it’s possible that he could hear his name called come draft day. After all, there are plenty of college pitchers who don’t give up .300+ opponents batting averages or ERAs that struggle to get below 8.00. But King is working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He’s a massive 6-foot-7 righthander with above-average stuff and the trendline is pointing in the right direction. King was committed to South Carolina before he blew out his elbow as a high school senior. He ended up at Volunteer State (Tenn.) JC instead. There he threw hard but showed no idea of the strike zone in four late-season appearances. It wasn’t much better in the early going at MTSU, but as the season has worn on, he’s started to find the strike zone. King has touched 99 mph with his lively four-seam fastball, although he sits 94-95 mph, and he flashes a plus low-80s curveball that has wicked depth at its best. He’s nowhere near where he will need to be, and he’ll hit a batter, throw another to the backstop and then break off two plus breaking balls in the span of 10 pitches. But as a later-round project, a team willing to work with him could get a gem.
