Doughty is a 6-foot-1, 196-pound righthander who dominated in his outings throughout the 2023 summer showcase circuit and then continued his high-end performance during the 2024 spring with Chaparral High in Southern California. While he’s a shorter righthander with a frame that is close to maxed out, he’s a sneaky good athlete who repeats his operation on the mound and throws from a fairly clean three-quarters slot. Doughty pitches in the low 90s and has been up to 96 mph, but scouts were impressed with his ability to hold 92-95 deep into his starts this spring. He does a nice job establishing his fastball in the zone for strikes and then snapping off a pair of high-spin breaking balls. He will throw a 78-80 mph downer curveball and a harder slider in the mid 80s. Both pitches have plus potential, though they can blend together at times. He can spin the ball in the 2,800 to 3,100 rpm range, and some scouts believe his feel to spin rivals Louisiana prep righthander William Schmidt for best in the 2024 class. Doughty’s ability to manipulate the shape of his breaking pitches, land them in the zone or bury them for whiffs is impressive. He has also thrown a mid-80s changeup, but it’s a distant fourth piece in his arsenal. Doughty is committed to Oklahoma State but has pitched well enough to warrant a day one selection.

BA Grade/Risk: 55/Extreme.
Track Record: Doughty ranked as the No. 47 prospect in the 2024 class on the back of his tremendous feel to spin the ball. The Guardians signed him for slot value—a $2,569,200 bonus—with the 36th overall pick in the draft to coax him out of a commitment to Oklahoma State.
Scouting Report: A 6-foot-1, 196-pound righthander, Doughty is a standout athlete who operates with a smooth, balanced, low-effort delivery. He has a clean and loose arm action and throws from a three-quarters slot he repeats well for a teenage pitcher. Doughty dominated his SoCal competition during the spring with a low-90s fastball that has been up to 96-97 mph and a pair of high-spin, plus breaking balls. His 78-80 mph downer curveball registers spin rates in the 3,200 rpm range and he pairs it with a hard slider in the mid 80s with similarly high pure spin rates. While both pitches have plus potential, Cleveland might have Doughty focus on the curveball initially. The curve immediately becomes a candidate for the best breaking ball in Cleveland’s system thanks to its depth and his feel to land it. Doughty has thrown a mid-80s changeup but it lagged behind his other three pitches in high school. His clean operation and athleticism could lead to above-average control.
The Future: Doughty is a high-upside righty with natural athleticism. He’s a scratch golfer and kicked a 60-yard field goal in high school. He has midrotation upside and should start the 2025 season with Low-A Lynchburg.

Doughty dominated during the summer of 2023 and between three starts in July and August he faced 31 batters, struck out 17 and walked just one. A 6-foot-1, 196-pound righthander, Doughty mostly works off a low 90s fastball that has touched 96 and a wicked, two-plane breaking ball that is among the best in the prep class. Doughty throws both pitches for strikes at a high clip, and his feel to land his 80-86 mph hammer breaking ball with spin rates in the 2,800-3,100 range is particularly advanced and leads to easy plus projections on the pitch. His ability to manipulate the shape, land the pitch in the zone, bury it for chases and backdoor it to lefthanded hitters makes it one of the better breaking balls in the class. Doughty is committed to Oklahoma State.
