Yankees IF Sandy Acevedo Killed In Car Accident

Sandy Acevedo, who signed with the Yankees as an international free agent last July on his 18th birthday, was killed Saturday night in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic, the team said.

Acevedo did not play last season after signing for $70,000, and was slated to play this season in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. The Yankees held a moment of silence in his honor Sunday prior to their game against the Rays.

Acevedo is the third prospect killed in a vehicle crash since January. The Astros’ righthander Jose Rosario was killed in a motorcycle accident, and the Orioles’ Ramon Ramirez died about a week later.
