Tigers Teen Kelvis Salcedo Rides Attacking Mindset To Low-A

The Tigers signed Venezuelan righthander Kelvis Salcedo just before his 17th birthday in 2023.
His discovery has served to bolster the organization’s international presence, which also counts fellow Venezuelan prospects Josue Briceño and Franyerber Montilla.
Salcedo reached Low-A Lakeland as a 19-year-old in 2025 after spending most of the season in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.
“I’ve always thought ‘bullish’ is a good way to describe his style,” a National League scout said. “He’s not scared to attack . . .
“Most of the arms at his level are raw, but what stood out the most to me was the way he seems to know himself. A lot of guys don’t at that age. I think that confidence is going to be a pretty useful tool for him.”
Standing in at 6 feet and 255 pounds, Salcedo admits the guidance of FCL pitching coach Willians Moreno was key in his ability to adapt to his first season in the U.S. following two in the Dominican Summer League.
Mixing a 99 mph heater with a sinker, splitter and slider, Salcedo worked a mixed assignment, starting eight of his 12 outings in Rookie ball with a 1.99 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.
From a distance, Lakeland manager Rene Rivera was keeping an eye on Salcedo and knew it wouldn’t be long before the latter would be promoted to the Florida State League.
“We all know Salcedo is a very talented pitcher,” Rivera said. “He did a great job in Rookie ball. He came into Lakeland and continued to perform at a high level.”
He made four of six FSL outings in relief, posting a 1.54 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 23.1 innings.
“He played a huge role in our playoff run,” Rivera said. “Everyone knows he’s still very young, but the talent is clearly there. He’s a great kid who listens, works and continues to learn.”
