Seth Beer, CWS Participants Highlight USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team Roster

Clemson sophomore Seth Beer and Oregon State All-American Nick Madrigal highlight the roster for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team, which begins play Thursday.

Madrigal and four others—his double-play partner Cadyn Grenier (Oregon State), Brady Singer (Florida), Jackson Lueck (Florida State) and Braden Shewmake (Texas A&M)—are playing in the College World Series in Omaha and could be delayed as long as June 30.

The team’s bullpen coach, Drew Linder of Florida State, could also be delayed as the Seminoles play on in Omaha.

The Collegiate National Team faces various teams in the Coastal Plain League starting Thursday at the USA National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. After that, CNT has five-game series with national teams from Taiwan and then Cuba, with the games in Cary, Durham and Charlotte, before facing Japan for five games at various locations in Massachusetts. The full schedule can be found here.

USA Baseball executive director and CEO Paul Seiler is excited about the challenge.

“Bringing in this level of opponent is special and fans can expect an incredibly high-caliber, hard-played series between two international baseball powers,” he said in a news release.

The games will help USA Baseball set its final 24-man roster.

UCLA coach John Savage is the team’s manager with assistants Dave Snow, Troy Buckley (Long Beach State), Rick Vanderhook (Cal State Fullerton) and Larry Lee (Cal Poly).

As far as pitchers, Savage has All-Americans Steven Gingery of Texas Tech and Auburn’s Case Mize, as well as Singer, Konnor Pilkington (Mississippi State), Sean Mooney (St. John’s) and Patrick Raby (Vanderbilt).

Beer, the 2016 Freshman of the Year, is returning to the CNT, but just five position players are locks to join the team. Two-way star Matt Wallner (Southern Mississippi) headlines the rest of the bats after swatting 19 home runs in his freshman year.

Clemson, Oklahoma and Oregon State each have two players on the provisional roster. The bolded players are guaranteed spots on the final team.
