Santa Clara, Texas-Rio Grande Valley Coaching Jobs Open

In addition to Greg Goff’s dismissal at Alabama, two more head coaching jobs opened Wednesday. Santa Clara announced coach Dan O’Brien resigned after six seasons, and Texas-Rio Grande Valley announced Manny Mantrana stepped down as head coach after nine seasons to become special assistant to the athletic director.

O’Brien came to Santa Clara in 2012 and went 128-194 over the last six seasons. Previously, he was head coach at UC San Diego, his alma mater, for 14 seasons.

The Broncos went 13-40 this spring and finished seventh in the West Coast Conference.

“It has truly been an honor to be the caretaker of such a proud and storied college baseball program,” O’Brien said in a statement. “I am proud of the foundation that is in place, and know that big things are in store for Bronco baseball.”

Mantrana took over the UTRGV program in 2008 and went 210-274-1 over the last nine seasons. Prior to UTRGV, he was the head coach for 12 seasons at St. Thomas (Fla.).

The Vaqueros went 24-28 this season and tied for last place in the Western Athletic Conference at 7-17.

“My ultimate goal in 27 years of coaching has always been to produce good fathers, husbands, friends, neighbors, co-workers and members of the community,” Mantrana said in a statement. “Transitioning into an administrative role allows me the opportunity to take that mission to a new level, as I hope to positively influence the lives of all 250 student-athletes in our department.”
