Prospect Report: Matt McLain Hits His First Homer Of The Fall

Matt McLain, SS, Reds: McLain, a two time first-rounder, connected for his first AFL home run yesterday afternoon. He added a walk and a stolen base, as McLain got the start at shortstop for Glendale. It was an inconsistent 2022 for McLain as he showcased game power and on-base ability but struggled for stretches at the plate, hitting .232/.363/.453.

Emmet Sheehan, RHP, Dodgers: It’s been an up-and-down Fall League for Sheehan, who has flashed good stuff but struggled with consistency. On Tuesday afternoon, Sheehan was his best self. Sitting 92-94 mph early, Sheehan found another gear in the later innings, sitting 93-95 mph and touching 96 mph. He went five scoreless as he struck out four, allowing three hitters to reach base.

Heston Kjerstad, OF, Orioles: Kjerstad continued to impress for Mesa in the night game. He went 3-for-5, including a loud fly out to dead center field where he missed a home run by mere feet. The former second overall pick is enjoying a strong fall, hitting .353 with a 1.009 OPS over 18 games with Mesa. The former Arkansas star is slowly putting a hellish few seasons in the rear view.

Mason Miller, RHP, Athletics: There’s arguably no pitcher currently in the Fall League that’s as electric as Miller. He went three perfect innings on Tuesday night, and he struck out five. Miller hit 101 mph and 100 mph multiple times on his fastball, mixing in a changeup and slider—which were both effective. It’s questionable if Miller has the necessary equipment to start, but his high-powered arsenal could blossom in a variety of roles.
