Prospect Report: Cubs and Rays Capture Titles, Norby Continues To Hit

Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs: Caissie connected for a three-run blast in the fourth inning of the deciding third game of the Midwest League Championship series to help South Bend capture the title over Lake County. Caissie finished the season with a .254/.349/.402 slash line with 11 home runs and 11 steals. After a rough first month that saw Caissie hit .122/.173/163, the outfielder performed well the remainder of the season. 

Austin Vernon, RHP, Rays: The Rays organization continues to dominate the minor league standings and collect league titles along the way. Rays affiliates made the Florida Complex League title game, won the Carolina League championship and last night Bowling Green secured the South Atlantic League title. Vernon, a 2021 11th-round pick, led the way, as the big-bodied righthander tossed 3.1 scoreless frames, striking out four batters along the way. The 6-foot-8 righthander wrapped up his season with a 9-4, 2.40 mark and 114 strikeouts to 41 walks across 78.2 innings. 

Connor Norby, 2B, Orioles: Pop quiz! Who leads the Orioles organization in home runs this season? If you guessed Anthony Santander, Gunnar Henderson or Adley Rutschman you’d be incorrect. The right answer is Connor Norby. The 2021 second-round pick has climbed the three highest levels of the minors in 2022, hitting a robust .278/.360/.523. Norby is part of the next wave of Orioles prospects that could contribute as early as next season for Baltimore. 

Colton Cowser, OF, Orioles: Cowser, like Norby, climbed three levels of the minors this season, finishing at Triple-A by season’s end. Cowser went 2-for-5 in Wednesday’s game, connecting for a monster blast that hit the roof of the restaurant located beyond the left field bleachers in Durham. Cowser has turned it on after a slow start at High-A Aberdeen to begin the season. 

Ezequiel Tovar, SS, Rockies: The shortstop went 2-for-4 for Albuquerque on Wednesday in what could be his final minor league game. Tovar was promoted to the big league club on Wednesday night and will join the Rockies this afternoon in Denver, marking a truly impressive rise by the shortstop, who began the 2021 season in Low-A. A standout defender with strong bat-to-ball skills and the bat speed to punish mistakes, Tovar is one of the most exciting middle infield prospects on both sides of the ball.
