Prospect Report: Carlos De La Cruz Homers In Win

Carlos De La Cruz, OF, Phillies: There are few position players as tall as De La Cruz in the history of the game. Standing 6-foot-8, De La Cruz is equipped with jaw-dropping raw power and swing-and-miss issues due to his long levers. On Thursday afternoon De La Cruz went off, going 4-for-5 with a HR and a trio of singles. He slugged his home run off of Russell Smith on the second pitch of his first at-bat, depositing a ball into left-center field at Camelback Ranch. He’s a player with tantalizing power potential and raw skills.

Edouard Julien, 2B, Twins: Julien led off the matinee at Camelback by depositing a ball to left field for a line drive home run, his fifth in Fall League play. He added a single later in the game and crossed the plate twice. While there are certainly some questions around Julien’s defensive chops at second base, few question his ability to hit and get on base at a high rate. He blossoming power has shifted into another gear this fall as he’s consistently hit for impact. Eligible to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason, Julien should see some time with the Twins major league club by mid-summer 2023.

Niko Kavadas, 1B, Red Sox: The former Notre Dame slugger connected for a pair of extra-base hits in Thursday’s matinee at Peoria. Kavadas finished the day 2-for-5 with a walk, a home run, a double and three runs batted in. It was a welcome power outburst for Kavadas, who has now gone deep in consecutive games. This could signify a turning point for Kavadas, who can go on serious power surges for long stretches. A strong finish to Kavadas’ 2022 would be a welcome sign for Red Sox fans concerned with how Kavadas ended the season at Double-A.

Nick Yorke, 2B, Red Sox: After a difficult 2022 season that saw Yorke drop off the Top 100 Prospects list, his strong showing in the AFL is a welcome reminder of the talented hitter Yorke has always been. In Thursday’s contest, Yorke connected for a solo shot in the ninth inning, his second long ball of the fall. Yorke is now hitting .324/.414/.507 during AFL play, building some positive momentum before he heads into the offseason in a few short weeks.

Mike Antico, OF, Cardinals: It would be easy to view Antico as a “grinder” type due to his unusual path into the professional game, but that’d be selling the Colts Neck, N.J. native short. Antico is an easy plus runner with loud barrel contact and surprising pop for a sub-6-foot hitter. He’s short to the ball and displays plus bat speed with the ability to catch up to velocity. On Thursday night, Antico showed the explosiveness in his game, connecting for a home run and stealing a base.
