The Cubs signed 28-year-old righthander Zach Rafferty after he trained at High Level Throwing in Lowell, Mass., this winter. He last pitched professionally in the independent Can-Am League in 2012 and is a product of Division III Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass.

Traded: RHP Aneurys Zabala and SS Drew Jackson to Dodgers for RHP Chase De Jong

The Mariners continued to add to their rotation depth when they traded for 23-year-old righthander Chase De Jong, the reigning Texas League pitcher of the year. He ranked among the TL leaders with a 2.86 ERA (second), 125 strikeouts (fourth) and a 1.02 WHIP (first) last year. Like fellow Mariners trade acquisitions Ariel Miranda and Dillon Overton, De Jong is an extreme flyball pitcher who will lean on Seattle’s revamped outfield defense if he receives a callup.
