Matuella Makes First Start In Extended Spring

Thirteen months after Tommy John surgery, former Duke ace Michael Matuella made his first start Wednesday at the Rangers’ extended spring training complex in Arizona.

BA’s Bill Mitchell was on hand and reports that Matuella pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out three and walking none. His fastball sat 93-96 mph and he also threw a changeup and curve. As Wednesday was the final day of extended spring training, Matuella is now expected to join low Class A Hickory.

Matuella entered the 2015 season as the top draft-eligible college pitcher and a projected top-five pick despite a back condition called spondylosis.

Despite the health concerns, the Rangers signed Matuella for $2 million, well above slot in the third round.
