Mariners Send Pat Venditte To Phillies For Joey Curletta

THE DEAL

Ambidextrous phenomenon Pat Venditte is on the move.

The Mariners traded Venditte to the Phillies on Sunday in exchange for minor league outfielder Joey Curletta.

Venditte is currently pitching for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic and surrendered a tie-breaking, two-run home run in the ninth inning against Venezuela on Saturday, although he also struck out three in 1.2 innings.

It is the 15th trade involving the Mariners made by general manager Jerry Dipoto since Nov. 1.

The Phillies acquired Curletta from the Dodgers last September as the player to be named later in the Carlos Ruiz trade, only to flip him six months later. Curletta was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the sixth round in 2012 out of a Phoenix-area high school. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder possesses above-average raw power but struggles to make the most of it due to poor contact ability, the result of a bat path that leaves him trying to hook and lift too many balls. His best tool is his plus arm, which led to 12 outfield assists in 83 games last year, mostly from right field. Curletta is likely headed for his third stint in Double-A and will try to make the necessary hitting adjustments to help him succeed there for the first time.

The switch-pitching wonder struggled badly in 15 appearances with the Blue Jays and Mariners in 2016 and spent most of the year in Triple-A. He now joins his fourth team in three seasons. Righthanded batters have given Venditte particular trouble in his career, torching him for a .286/.384/.533 slash line. Venditte has had much better success when throwing from the left side and serving effectively as a lefty specialist, holding lefties to a .187/.244/.373 line in his career.
