College Roundup: No. 14 Texas Tech Stays Hot With Rout Of No. 11 Arizona

Fresh off finishing a 2-1 weekend at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in Houston with victories against Mississippi and Louisiana State, No. 14 Texas Tech returned home Tuesday to face No. 11 Arizona in a matchup of 2016 College World Series participants.

The Red Raiders continued their strong start to the season with a 13-1 victory. First baseman Hunter Hargrove (2-for-4, 3 R) and center fielder Tanner Gardner (2-for-3, 3 R), the third and fourth hitters, led the offense as Texas Tech (12-2) scored more than 10 runs for the fifth time this season. The Red Raiders combined for 14 hits and eight walks.

Arizona (10-2) won the inaugural Frisco College Baseball Classic over the weekend, but lost the final two games of its Texas trip. The Wildcats went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position Tuesday.

Five hours east of Lubbock, No. 1 Texas Christian extended its winning streak to seven games with a 3-2 victory against Dallas Baptist in 10 innings. Cam Warner (2-for-4) drove in Luken Baker with a two-out single off DBU closer Seth Elledge for a walk-off win. Baker, a Preseason All-American, went 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and three walks.

The Horned Frogs have won five straight extra-innings games, a streak that dates back to 2015. Two of TCU’s last three games have gone into extra innings. It also defeated Texas A&M, 11-10, in 15 innings Saturday at the Shriners College Classic.

No. 3 Florida is undefeated in weekend games, starting the season with sweeps of William & Mary, Miami and Columbia. During midweek games, however, when the Gators don’t have their trio of potential top-10 picks on the mound, they are 1-3 this season.

Florida Gulf Coast defeated Florida, 7-3, on Tuesday at jetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla. With their seventh straight victory, the Eagles improved to 11-2 this season, matching their best start in the program’s Division I era. Second baseman Matt Reardon (3-for-5) and shortstop Julio Gonzalez (2-for-4, 3B, 4 RBI) led the offense.

FGCU took advantage of an error on Florida third baseman Jonathan India, leading to four unearned runs in the fourth inning. The Gators (10-3) will look to bounce back Wednesday when the two teams meet for a rematch in Gainesville.

In the first of three meetings this season between Land of Enchatment rivals, New Mexico defeated New Mexico State, 8-2. First baseman Jack Zoellner started the game with three straight hits to run his streak to nine hits in his last nine at bats before grounding out in the eighth inning. Zoellner is hitting .440/.491/.880 with six home runs this season.
