The topics discussed at length this week are:

  • Texas going on the road and taking a series against Texas Christian. With the series win, the Longhorns move to within a game of the Horned Frogs in the Big 12 standings. The regular-season champion will be determined two weeks from now, when TCU finishes with a road series against Kansas State and Texas hosts West Virginia. Texas has the tiebreaker, so it will win the title in the event of a tie atop the standings, which it could achieve by outperforming TCU by one game in those final series.
  • Stanford passing its first big test this season by winning a home series against Arizona. The Cardinal got good starts from Brendan Beck and Alex Williams and kept pace with the Arizona offense, and as a result, it looks increasingly like Stanford will be hosting when those host sites are announced later this week. It has a tough schedule to finish, so even if it is announced as one of the 20 potential hosts, it can’t afford to slow down as the season closes.
  • UC Irvine winning its series on the road against UC Santa Barbara to take a two-game lead in the Big West standings. The Anteaters’ pitching staff just stifled the Gauchos’ lineup for most of the weekend, and its offense, which is the most prolific in the Big West, did enough to win. At this point, barring an uncharacteristic collapse down the stretch, UCI looks ticketed for the postseason.
  • The happenings in the SEC, which included Arkansas getting a big test from Georgia but coming through with a series win, Florida winning a dramatic series against Kentucky on the road, South Carolina dropping a series against Mississippi State and Mississippi getting upset on the road against Texas A&M.
  • Florida State winning a road series against Notre Dame, becoming the first team to win a series against the Irish this season. By doing so, FSU put itself firmly in the discussion to host a regional, which could serve to fill in a vacuum left by a lack of ACC teams in the hosting race to this point.
  • East Carolina winning a series with Tulane at home to take back the lead in the American Athletic Conference standings. ECU looked like the better team from the start of the series and that played out throughout the weekend. The series loss complicates Tulane’s postseason situation, and it will have to play well down the stretch to feel good about its chances.
