Baseball America Spring Training Prospect Report — March 10, 2020

Monday’s Stars

Justin Dunn, RHP, Mariners – Jarred Kelenic was the top prospect the Mariners got from the Mets in last year’s deal that sent Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano to New York, but Dunn continues to show he shouldn’t be forgotten. The Mariners No. 8 prospect pitched three scoreless innings of relief with one hit allowed, one walk and five strikeouts on Monday. After leading the Texas League in strikeouts and earning his first big league callup last year, Dunn should get plenty of opportunity this year with the rebuilding Mariners.

Kwang-Hyun Kim, LHP, Cardinals – The Korean import continues to impress this spring. Kim tossed three scoreless innings with two hits allowed, no walks and four strikeouts in a start against the Twins. He has yet to allow a run in eight innings this spring, and notably has 11 strikeouts against just one walk.

Sean Murphy, C, Athletics – Murphy missed the start of spring training recovering from offseason knee surgery, but he’s quickly getting up to speed. The A’s No. 3 prospect went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Monday to help Oakland to a 5-0 win over Texas. As long as stays healthy, the A’s starting catching job is Murphy’s to lose.

Tony Gonsolin, RHP, Dodgers – On the day the Dodgers announced their Opening Day rotation would not include Gonsolin, the Dodgers’ No. 4 prospect went out and continued to dominate as he has all spring. Gonsolin pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief with two hits, one walk and three strikeouts against the Padres. He has yet to allow a run in three spring training appearances and is making a strong case to break camp with the Dodgers as a swingman.

Anthony Kay, LHP, Blue Jays – Kay bounced back from a rough spring training outing with a sharp one, delivering three scoreless innings with four strikeouts in a start against the Pirates. The Blue Jays No. 9 prospect has alternated good and bad outings all spring, but he’s in the mix to break camp with the club and helped himself with his latest showing.

Kelvin Gutierrez, 3B, Royals – Gutierrez made his major league debut last year and is angling for more playing time this year with the rebuilding Royals. Kansas City’s No. 18 prospect went 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run in Monday’s 4-4 tie with the D-backs. It was his second multi-hit effort in his last three games and elevated his OPS to .817 this spring.

Yu Chang, SS, Indians – Cleveland’s No. 22 prospect went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI to help an Indians split squad beat the Angels in an 11-10 slugfest. Chang scuffled in his big league debut last year, but his development is important as the Tribe’s lone true shortstop to back up Francisco Lindor.
