Thursday’s Stars

Ryan Mountcastle, 1B, Orioles – The reigning Triple-A International League MVP continues to make the case his bat is big-league ready. Mountcastle went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI in the Orioles’ 13-0 win over the Pirates. The Orioles No. 5 prospect notched all three hits off of major leaguers, including a solo home run off Chris Stratton.

Tyler Stephenson, C, Reds – Stephenson appears to finally be delivering on the promise that made him the 11th overall pick in 2016. The Reds No. 4 prospect went 2-for-2 with a double, a homer and four RBIs in the Reds’ 8-0 win over the D-backs. He also drew a walk in his other plate appearance.

Tony Gonsolin, RHP, Dodgers – Gonsolin pitched two scoreless innings with one hit allowed, no walks and three strikeouts in his second start of the spring. The Dodgers’ No. 4 prospect is putting up a fight for one of the Dodgers’ last two starting rotation spots.

Clarke Schmidt, RHP, Yankees – Schmidt pitched two scoreless innings with two hits allowed, no walks and three strikeouts in his second Grapefruit League start. The Yankees No. 2 prospect suddenly has a clearer path to the majors in 2020 after the injuries to Luis Severino and James Paxton.

Deivy Grullon, C, Phillies – Grullon is more known for his defense, but his bat is coming around. The Phillies No. 16 prospect doubled and homered in the Phillies’ win over the Red Sox. After making his ML debut last year, he is trying to overtake Andrew Knapp to become J.T. Realmuto’s backup.

Robert Dugger, RHP, Marlins – Dugger pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, his second straight scoreless appearance of at least two innings this spring. The Marlins’ No. 28 prospect made his major league debut last year and is aiming to return to Miami.
