Tuesday’s Stars

Nate Pearson, RHP, Blue Jays — The Blue Jays’ top pitching prospect was electric in his spring training debut on Tuesday. The righthander with the 80-grade fastball (which has touched 104 mph) whiffed all three hitters he faced against the Yankees. His victims were all established major leaguers, too: Tyler Wade, Mike Tauchman and Miguel Andujar. After a season with a partially managed workload (he alternated between starts of two and five innings for the first half of 2019) the reins should come off this year. Pearson will likely start in Triple-A Buffalo but is poised to join Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio as part of Toronto’s fantastic youth movement. 

Jesus Luzardo, LHP, Athletics — Luzardo is going to be good. Like, really, really good. Though his 2019 was stymied by health issues, Luzardo still managed to make it to the big leagues and showed enough to earn a spot on Oakland’s playoff roster for the Wild Card Game against the Rays. The Florida high school product and former Nationals farmhand pairs a plus fastball with a double-plus changeup as his two primary weapons and rounds out his arsenal with an above-average curveball. He threw two scoreless innings on Tuesday.

Riley Greene, OF, Tigers — Detroit’s system is more than an arm farm. Greene, the Tigers’ first-rounder in 2019 out of high school in Florida, tore up the lower levels and made it all the way to low Class A West Michigan. He ranked No. 2 in the New York-Penn League and checked in as the No. 48 prospect in the initial 2020 Top 100. Greene has a chance to be a plus hitter with plus power and has started his inaugural Grapefruit League campaign by going 2-for-2 with two home runs. Now that’s what we’d call starting your season with a roar. 

Jose Garcia, SS, Reds — One of the most intriguing risers in the Reds system in 2019, Garcia tore up the Florida State League relatively anonymously. The 21-year-old hit .280 with 37 doubles, which led the Florida State League and tied him for fifth in the minors. He socked two home runs on Tuesday against big leaguers Keynan Middleton and Cam Bedrosian. He’s an excellent defender as well, so if his bat continues to play he could rise even higher on the Reds’ Top 30.
