Thursday's Stars

Ryan Jeffers, DH, Twins. Jeffers went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. He provided more than enough offense by himself as Cedar Rapids beat Beloit 10-1. Jeffers, a surprise second round pick out of UNC Wilmington, had an excellent pro debut this year, hitting .344/.444/.502 between Rookie-level Elizabethton and low Class A Cedar Rapids.

Francisco Mejia, C, Padres. Mejia made his first start for the Padres yesterday and it's hard to imagine how it could have gone much better. Mejia homered twice. He caught up top 96 and 97 mph fastballs to hit them out. Mejia faces questions about his over-aggressiveness at the plate, but there has never been any doubt as to his ability to catch up to quality fastballs.

Rowdy Tellez, 1B, Blue Jays. Tellez adjustment to the major leagues could not be going any better. He went 3-for-4 yesterday with three doubles. That gives him four doubles in just five big league at-bats for a .800/.800/1.600 slash line. Tellez put up modest numbers this year in Triple-A, but he's giving Toronto something to remember in his first two MLB games.

Harold Ramirez, OF, Blue Jays. Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk for Double-A New Hampshire in the playoffs.

Vidal Brujan, 2B, Rays. Brujan was sent back to low Class A Bowling Green to help his old club in the playoffs. He went 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk and three runs scored as the Hot Rods beat Lansing in the Midwest League playoffs.

Corbin Martin, RHP, Astros. Martin's outstanding first full pro season just keeps getting better. He retired the first 11 batters in order and allowed only one hit and one walk over 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out nine. Martin's excellent outing helped Corpus Christi jump out to a 2-0 lead in their playoff series against San Antonio.

Nestor Cortes, LHP, Yankees. Cortes was even better than Martin as he helped Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to a 2-0 lead in their playoff series against Lehigh Valley. Cortes allowed a first-inning walk, then retired 20 batters in a row. He carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning as he held Scranton scoreless over eight innings.

Jhoan Duran, RHP, Twins. Duran has been great for Cedar Rapids ever since he was acquired from the D-Backs in the Eduardo Escobar trade in July. Duran struck out 10 in six innings, allowing one run while walking three and allowing three hits.
