Baseball America Prospect Report -- May 20, 2019

Moises Gomez, LF, Rays. Gomez was the true definition of a clean-up hitter for high Class A Charlotte. The outfielder had a double and smashed a two-run home run in the first inning as well as a two-run shot in the fifth inning. It was his first four RBI game of the season, and his first multi-hit performance in his last nine games. Tampa’s No. 10 prospect has plus power, but still needs to cut down on the strikeouts before making the jump to the upper minors.

Logan Gilbert, RHP, Mariners. Gilbert allowed just two hits across seven scoreless frames for high Class A Modesto. The Mariners’ No. 7 prospect fanned 11 hitters while allowing just two hits and no walks. Gilbert has now compiled 14 and a third scoreless innings, dating back to his first California League start. He is competitive on the mound, and his extension helps him to maximize his four-pitch mix.

Ryan Mountcastle, 3B, Orioles. Mountcastle drove in a career-high five runs for Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles’ No. 3 prospect had only five RBIs in the month of May, and was able to match that total in just one game. He had a double and smashed a three-run home run to right field on a pitch that was left up in the zone. It was his second multi-hit game in a row, and third over the last five games.

Jordan Holloway, RHP, Marlins. Miami’s No. 16 prospect tossed five scoreless innings for high Class A Jupiter. The righthander punched out 11 while allowing three hits and a walk in his five frames. Holloway has been on a roll lately, extending his scoreless streak to 15 and a third innings. His fastball touches the upper 90s, but it’s the command of his curveball that has helped him to produce during this stretch.

Aristides Aquino, RF, Reds. Aquino had a four-hit game for Triple-A Louisville, driving in a run while coming around to score twice. He had three base knocks and hit a solo home run to left center field in the eighth inning. The Reds’ No. 18 prospect has had back-to-back multi-hit games in his first two appearances since returning from a shoulder sprain that sidelined him since late April.

Konnor Pilkington, LHP, White Sox. After allowing five runs in his previous start, Pilkington had a bounce-back outing for high Class A Winston-Salem on Sunday. The lefthander tossed six scoreless frames while allowing just three hits and two walks. Pilkington was absolutely dominant, striking out a season-high 12 batters. Chicago’s No. 22 prospect doesn’t overpower hitters but works with above-average command of his secondary stuff and the ability to manipulate its break.
