Baseball America Prospect Report -- May 1, 2019

Dylan Cease, RHP, White Sox. Cease allowed two earned runs in five innings for Triple-A Charlotte. The righthander fanned a career-high 11 batters and walked only one. Chicago’s No. 3 prospect bounced back after two rough starts in which he allowed seven earned runs in just eight and a third innings pitched.

Rico Garcia, RHP, Rockies. The Rockies’ No. 22 prospect was in a grove for Double-A Hartford, tossing a season-high six and two thirds scoreless innings. The righthander collected 11 strike outs and has stretched his scoreless innings streak to 15 and two thirds. Garcia works with a three-pitch mix that has been helped out by an uptick in arm strength and fastball velocity.

Jeter Downs, SS, Dodgers. Downs had a three-hit game for high Class A Rancho Cucamonga. He doubled and hit a home run while also scoring three times. Although the Dodgers’ No. 13 prospect shows flashes of a future above-average hit tool, he is currently batting .213/.276/.371 with eight extra-base hits in 89 at-bats.

Johan Oviedo, RHP, Cardinals. The Cardinals’ No. 20 prospect allowed one run in six innings for high Class A Palm Beach. Oviedo allowed six hits and walked three batters, but managed to work around trouble with seven strike outs. While Oviedo does get some swing and miss, he needs to iron out his control in order to profile as a starter down the road.

Michael Baumann, RHP, Orioles. Baumann tossed six and two thirds hitless innings for high Class A Frederick. The righthander didn’t walk a batter and collected 12 strike outs in his second double-digit strike out game of the season. It was a big bounce back for the Orioles’ No. 21 prospect who coughed up nine hits in three and a third innings his previous start.

Jarred Kelenic, OF, Mariners. Kelenic had two hits in four at-bats for low Class A West Virginia. He hit a solo home run in the first inning and a double later in the game. Kelenic has an above-average eye at the plate and feel to hit in addition to solid defensive skills. The Mariners’ No. 3 prospect is now batting .337/.430/.616 with 14 extra-base hits in 86 at-bats.

Jake Wong, RHP, Giants. Wong tossed a hitless six innings for low Class A Augusta. The Giants’ No. 10 prospect had six strikeouts and only walked two batters before making his exit. The righthander is a consistent strike thrower that works with a fastball-curveball combo and is developing a future average changeup.

Tucupita Marcano, 2B, Padres. Marcano had a four-hit game for low Class A Fort Wayne. The Padres’ No. 27 prospect had four base knocks and drove in two runs. Marcano is known for having an advanced approach at the plate with feel to be a plus hitter but doesn’t project to have much power.
