Aguilar signed out of Venezuela for $60,000 and spent his first two seasons in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. He wasn't in the plans to come stateside in 2014, but he forced the organization's hand. He's a heady player who shows his aptitude in the way he positions himself and reads swings on defense. Aguilar's range is solid for the position, and his hands are above-average. He's an above-average runner (6.7-second 60-yard dash times) with improving power, tying for second in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Despite his lean frame, Aguilar is strong through his hands and wrists, and he uses a swing that features a leg kick as a timing mechanism and strong wrist snap at the end. He will begin 2015 in extended spring training before an assignment to one of the Yankees' three short-season clubs.

Minor League Top Prospects

After signing for $60,000 in January 2012, Aguilar spent two nondescript years in the Dominican Summer League, but he impressed the Yankees so much during extended spring training that they kept him in Tampa and his performance carried over to the GCL. He missed close to three weeks in August with a groin injury. Aguilar has a level swing and squares up the ball consistently. He uses a leg kick as a timing mechanism but doesn't over-swing, maintaining good rhythm and balance at the plate. With strong hands and wrists, he's able to generate power through his bat speed, giving him an intriguing profile as a shortstop who can hit for average and power. Aguilar is a smart player who fields his position well with an average arm. He goes to his backhand well and is smooth turning double plays, but he's a fringy runner with just adequate range.
