White is one of the most accomplished power hitters in college baseball this century. He produced a historic freshman season with North Carolina State in 2022, when he hit 27 home runs, then transferred to LSU in 2023 and hit 24 more homers. That season he also won a College World Series championship alongside Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews. White then added 24 more home runs in his 2024 draft season, giving him 75 for his career to go with a .355/.419/.704 batting line. He ranks in a tie for eighth place on the all-time college home run list, accomplishing the feat in just three seasons. A 6-foot-1, 228-pound third baseman, White’s profile is driven by his contact ability and power. He employs a wide setup in the box that gets even wider in two-strike counts with no stride. He uses his natural strength and electric hand speed to drive the ball to all fields without much lower half usage at times. His career 14.5% strikeout rate is low for a slugger of his caliber and speaks to his impressive pure contact skills, though his 8.2% walk rate also points to his aggressive swing decisions. He swings the bat often and expands the zone at a high clip, though he’s made that approach work for him in college. White is a bottom-of-the-scale runner who is a risk to move to first base, though he did improve defensively at the hot corner in 2024 and has arm strength, if not the mobility and range, for the position in pro ball.

Track Record: White emerged as a college superstar, first as Freshman of the Year at North Carolina State in 2022 before he transferred to Louisiana State, where he won a College World Series championship alongside Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews in 2023. By the end of his three-year college career, “Tommy Tanks” hit 75 home runs, good for eighth most all-time. White’s draft stock slid in his junior year after he didn’t hit for quite as much impact. The A’s drafted him in the second round that year and signed him for $3 million. He struggled in his pro debut with Low-A Stockton, slashing .224/.303/.299 in 25 games.
Scouting Report: Don’t let White’s burly build and collegiate moniker fool you—he’s a gifted hitter with fast hands and feel for the barrel who struck out just 14.5% of the time in college. He has a chance to pair above-average contact ability with plus power that presently works best to right-center field. To make the most of his offensive talents, White will need to make better swing decisions. His extremely aggressive approach worked in college but was tested in his pro debut, especially with two strikes, and he chased nearly 40% of the time with Low-A Stockton. White’s offensive tools may need to carry the rest of his profile. He’s a bottom-of-the-scale runner, and evaluators are mixed on whether he’s agile enough to stick at third base. Area scouts felt that White made strides defensively at LSU in 2024, and the A’s departed their instructional league a bit more optimistic about his chances to stick there. Still, White has below-average range, albeit with functional glovework, at the hot corner and a solid-average arm.
The Future: If he can defend the position, White has everyday upside as an offensive-oriented third baseman. He’ll need to really mash if he ends up moving to first base.
