BA Grade/Risk: 40/Medium.
Track Record: Blalock signed with the Red Sox for $250,000 as a 32nd-round pick in the 2019 draft and missed all of 2022 after having Tommy John Surgery. The Red Sox traded Blalock to the Brewers in the 2023 trade deadline deal that sent Luis Urías to the Red Sox. He was traded again at the 2024 trade deadline to Colorado for Nick Mears. Prior to the trade to the Rockies, Blalock made his debut with the Brewers on June 20, 2024 at San Diego. Blalock made six starts for the Rockies at the end of 2024.
Scouting Report: Blalock is an average-sized righthander with a deep pitch mix and feel for the strike zone. His four-seam fastball sits 93-94 mph and touches 97 mph at peak with above-average ride and heavy cut. The pitch missed bats at a decent rate in the majors. Blalock mixes three different breaking balls, but his most-used secondary is a mid-80s slider with gyro-cut shape. Blalock throws an upper-70s curveball and mixes in an upper-80s cutter against lefties. His best putaway pitch is a splitter that sits in the mid-80s with moderate armside run.
The Future: Blalock is a ready-made back-end starter who should continue to see starts with the Rockies in 2025.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: Blalock signed with the Red Sox for $250,000 as a 32nd-round pick in the 2019 draft. After the pandemic wiped out the 2020 season, Blalock spent 2021 with Low-A Salem, but Tommy John surgery erased his 2022 season. He was back pitching in 2023 when the Red Sox dealt him to the Brewers in the trade deadline deal that brought infielder Luis Urias to Boston. The Brewers added Blalock to the 40-man roster after the season.
Scouting Report: Blalock’s best pitch is his fastball, which he throws for strikes, sitting at 91-95 mph and touching 96. He throws from a near over-the-top arm slot, getting excellent carry on his fastball with 21 inches of induced vertical break, enabling him to get swing-and-miss up in the zone. There’s no wipeout secondary pitch for Blalock, whose main offspeed offering has been a low-to-mid 80s slider that flashes as an average pitch with spin in the 2,500-2,600 rpm range. The 2023 addition of an 84-88 mph split-changeup has been an asset. It’s an average pitch that plays well off his high-slot fastball to induce chase and give him a weapon against lefties. Blalock’s mid-70s curveball has good depth and is a solid-average pitch, one that could make him more effective if he increases its usage.
The Future: Blalock’s repertoire and ability to throw strikes give him a chance to be a back-end starter. If not, his stuff could play up in relief. He should open 2024 in Double-A.
