More than a decade has passed since the Twins let David Ortiz escape their grasp. If everything breaks right, they might finally have found a legitimate heir in Lewin Diaz. Signed for $1.4 million at the start of the 2013 international signing period, Diaz is more than a one-dimensional slugger. Like Ortiz, he shows the ability to hit the ball where it's pitched along with impressive raw power. Diaz has plus bat speed and an advanced feel for hitting, but at times he settled for too many singles as an amateur in the Dominican Prospect League. Before signing he showed a tendency toward pre-pitch movement in his swing and could get tied up inside. Already 6-foot-4 and approaching 230 pounds, Diaz is close to outgrowing right field, but the Twins will let him continue to bounce between the outfield and first base. Few thought Miguel Sano would be able to stay at third base as long as he has, so perhaps Diaz, who turned 17 in September, will do the same with his outfield skills. He has a plus arm but projects as a first baseman as he matures. A below-average runner, Diaz reminds some Twins officials of 2006 first-rounder Chris Parmelee, albeit with more athletic ability. The Twins like Diaz's makeup and will bring him to the U.S. for his pro debut in 2014, likely in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League.
