The junior righthander was a mainstay in the Illinois weekend rotation this spring, posting a 6-4 record with a 4.59 ERA. Though not overpowering, with 76 punchouts in 80.1 innings pitched, Wenninger has more upside remaining. The 6-foot-4 righty has a high-waisted frame with plenty of room to add physicality. He throws from a near over-the-top slot and relies heavily on his fastball that will sit anywhere from 90-94 mph, and it touches 96 mph. His fastball profile includes an average of 18 inches of vertical break and 13.5 inches of horizontal break. It is a pitch that is sporadic in the zone and Wenninger will need to fine tune his command with it. His go-to pitch is his low-to-mid-80s changeup. When on, it gives both lefthanded and righthanded hitters fits with its downward fading action that leads to plenty of swing and miss. He will throw it anytime in the count and it adds some sneak to his fastball. Wenninger does throw a curveball. It serves mostly as a get-me-over offering and gives the hitter a different look. It is a pitch that can be developed further and as of now projects to be an average offering. Wenninger throws strikes, walking only 28 batters this spring, but his overall command needs improvement. His numbers were damaged in several outings this spring when his changeup was not at its best and forced him to challenge hitters over the plate with his fastball.
