Track Record: Mayea moved from Cuba to the Dominican Republic before signing with the Yankees in 2023 for $4.35 million. His career has been waylaid by underperformance and injuries. After starting off hot in a repeat of the Florida Complex League, Mayea hurt his ankle on May 30 and missed the rest of the season.
Scouting Report: On the surface, Mayea was on his way to a breakout before landing on the injured list. He hit three home runs in 20 games, matching his total from 73 games over the previous two seasons. Under the hood, the picture was less rosy. With two strikes, he did a good job shortening up and hunting contact. Earlier in counts, he hunted home runs, which led to big-time miss rates, including an overall mark of 35.7% and an in-zone rate of 25.8%. The Yankees pushed Mayea to find an approach that melded the best of those two worlds into something more selectively aggressive. Defensively, he played mostly center field in the FCL, but scouts already noticed he had slowed down in 2024, so his future is likely in a corner. He’s a fringy runner who gets closer to average underway.
The Future: Mayea will likely return to the FCL for a third stint in 2026. He needs to refine his approach and make more contact to get to his ceiling, which is as a second-division regular corner outfielder.

Track Record: After defecting from Cuba, Mayea moved to the Dominican Republic. He signed with the Yankees on Jan. 15, 2023 for $4.35 million and made his debut in the Dominican Summer League. He homered three times and drove in 18 runs in the DSL, then moved stateside in 2024.
Scouting Report: In the Florida Complex League, Mayea was underwhelming. He made contact and took his walks, but his power was non-existent. His miss rates were elevated, and scouts saw a player who too often let his swing get too long and seemed locked into an approach designed to lift and pull. When the swing was more compact, he showed hints of his potential as a player designed to drill doubles to all sectors. In particular, he struggled with fastballs of higher quality than he saw in the DSL. Mayea slowed down a little bit and showed scouts fringe-average times to first base and average speed underway. That’s a big dip from the double-plus times he showed in prior years and might hinder his chances to stick in center field. Mayea dealt with some nagging injuries in 2024, which might have led to his down year in the FCL.
The Future: Another year in the FCL might be on the menu for Mayea. With a clean bill of health, his tools—and his prospect stock—might return to their former levels.

Track Record: Mayea defected from Cuba at an early age and established residency in the Dominican Republic. He signed with the Yankees on Jan. 15, 2023 for $4.35 million, the third-highest bonus of any player signed in the class. He spent his first pro season in the Dominican Summer League, where produced a .782 OPS with three homers and 18 RBIs. He missed about 10 days of action after a minor ankle injury sustained on Opening Day while trying to stretch a double into a triple.
Scouting Report: Mayea was one of the most coveted player on the international market thanks to a well-rounded set of tools that should help him provide value on both sides of the ball. He turned in a solid pro debut that included excellent bat-to-ball skills compared to his peers and max exit velocities up to 108 mph. To turn those traits into more production, he’ll need to get more balls in the air. In the DSL, 58% of his contact was on the ground. His speed and athleticism should help him stick in center field, where he can be an average defender with an arm that could get to plus if he gains strength. He’s a double-plus runner who can cover plenty of ground. .
The Future: Mayea should move to the Florida Complex League in 2024, when he’ll get his first test stateside and should continue the wave of high-impact talent that the Yankees have sent through the low minors in recent years.
