Summerhill is a sweet-swinging lefthanded hitter and outfielder who has one of the more well-rounded profiles in the 2025 college class. With a 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame, he still has some physical projection remaining in his frame and has built up a solid track record as an advanced hitter, including a strong 2024 season in the Cape Cod League and a career .330/.434/.552 slash line with Arizona. Summerhill missed some time during his 2025 draft season with a fractured right hand, but when he was healthy he looked like perhaps the best college hitter in the class. He stands tall in the box with a high handset before getting into his legs with a toe tap and leg kick, and he has both a strong batting eye and great contact ability. He’s a selective hitter who knows when to pull the trigger, with a 90% in-zone contact rate and very little swing-and-miss to speak of against any pitch type—with sliders being the one exception. While Summerhill has a chance to be an above-average pure hitter, his power is more modest and could settle into average home run production that mostly comes to his pull side. Summerhill’s secondary tools are all solid as well. He’s an average to above-average runner who has some experience in center field, though he was Arizona’s everyday right fielder in 2025. Summerhill is a fine defender with an average arm. He should be a first-rounder on the strength of his bat but could take a leap if he adds strength.

Track Record: Summerhill was considered one of the top pure hitters in the 2025 college class after producing for average both at Arizona and in the Cape Cod League. But he missed a month of his junior season with a broken hand, and that may have cost him a spot in the first round. Summerhill was hitting .409/.500/.656 at the time of the injury but hit just .263/.412/.434 after he returned. The Rays drafted him with the 42nd overall pick. Summerhill’s older brother Colin, an Angels undrafted free agent in 2024, beat Brendan to pro ball by a year.
Scouting Report: Summerhill immediately became one of the Rays’ best contact hitters as soon as he signed. He’s long shown excellent barrel control and adjustability in his swing. There’s no one way to pitch him. If a pitcher succeeds in one at-bat, there’s little guarantee that the same approach will work the next time. Summerhill’s power has always been modest. He could sell out for a few more home runs, but it’s more likely he’ll settle in as a plus hitter with fringe-average pop. Summerhill played both center and right field in college and eventually fits as a corner outfielder for the Rays. But that means he’ll likely get plenty of time in center field for now, because the Rays try to play three center field-capable outfielders most of the time. He’s an above-average runner who should be at least average in the corners with a chance to be above-average. He has an average arm.
The Future: Summerhill’s brief pro debut for Low-A Charleston ended early because of an oblique injury, but he should be full speed for spring training. He fits the kind of well-rounded college hitter that the Rays covet in the draft. He should be a key part of the High-A Bowling Green outfield for most of 2026.

Summerhill provided a taste of his toolset in 2023 when he hit .259/.419/.414 with five extra-base hits in 22 games with Arizona. He followed that up with an exceptional 2024 season, hit .324/.399/.550 with 32 extra-base hits and 59 RBIs in 58 games, and then turned in a strong stint in the Cape Cod League during the summer. Summerhill has a smooth lefthanded stroke with above-average power to the pull side as well as advanced feel for the barrel to the tune of a 90% overall in-zone contact rate. His above-average speed and athleticism translate well to centerfield, where he has a chance to stick long term. His well-rounded profile could be enough to make him a first-round pick.
